The War Wagon

Enjoyable if unexceptional John Wayne western. Perfect lazy Saturday afternoon fare.

Typical post 'Liberty Valance' John Wayne western, in that you'll get exactly what you might be expecting. Has the qualities of a caper film, and the violence lacks any edge. Reasonable enough viewing for a rainy Saturday afternoon, and nothing better to do.

"The War Wagon" is an armored car robbery moved to a western setting. It's plot lines specially created so John Wayne can be a thief and keep his movie personae intact.

A darn good yarn - derivative and a worthy bearer of John Wayne's brand. The swarmy, dizzying repartee between Douglas and Wayne is the highlight, both good and bad: it's cute, but by the end you'll wish they would just freaking make out already and get it over with.

Not bad.

Probably one of the better ones of its genre - but westerns of the time all seem a bit samey to me.
