Even though awaited, no-one is really ready when the mountain pass of Åkneset above the scenic narrow Norwegian fjord Geiranger falls out and creates a 85 meter high violent tsunami. A geologist is one of those caught in the middle of it. (imdb)

In a movie which is essentially Dante's Peak with fjords, the director does a good job of holding back the spectacular action scenes till the final third. Up to then, the drama is character-based, and suspense is steadily built with regular lengthy shots of Kristoffer Joner's worried face. The Wave pulls no punches and will readily admit to using every disaster movie trope and cliché. But it's very skilfully directed, and once it gets started the level of tension barely dips at all. Rugged.

Norwegians try a disaster movie and it's not a complete disaster. The performance for the most part is good and at certain moments the film looked gorgeous, but it suffers from the disaster movie syndrom. There are simply too many plot holes, stupid moments and bad CGI to make this a good film. It's a watchable flick not better, but also not worse than any other Hollywood movie with a similar theme.

Not much different than a hollywood disaster movie besides the quality acting.

A mostly typical disaster movie, with dumb decisions throughout, in its most basic structure, but it's brought up a notch by keeping the stakes at a more reasonable level than the usual world ending cataclysm of such movies and decent performances.

Film from Norway about a rockslide and resulting wave. Be prepared for subtitles. Otherwise, intense action and emotional as a man tries to save his family.

The payoff is decent enough, but the slow character development and build up aren’t necessarily worth sitting through.

I actually enjoyed this more than I thought I would. It is what you would expect, but still at a higher level than what normally comes out of Scandinavia. Some og the performances are a bit sketchy, especially from the danes (SIGH!)... The leads however, are great and the effects are good. Norway is a beautiful country. *Good

Beautfiul, uses all the typical elements of a Hollywood disaster movie but does it elegantly

For some weird reasons, I expected this Norwegian disaster movie to be somewhat different from those common Hollywood disaster movies. It seems that I was totally mistaken. But hey, nice scenery.

An "adult" movie that concentrates on the human impact of a disaster, rather than "San Andreas" movies which concentrate on how great the disaster can be displayed with current CGI without caring much who dies (the more the merrier!). btw: I have learned my CPR technique from disaster films: lots of chest pumps and breaths, give up, then start shouting "no" and more frantic pummelling: it works every time. Immensely likeable cast, esp. the little girl. Sure it has faults, but it was a tense ride

A Norwegian disaster movie. It borrows a lot from the Hollywood versions of this, but feels a little lacking in some places. The movie maintains a good feel of tension throughout with the looming danger, the disaster, and the aftermath. The relational aspect of the movie is a bit more awkward. Family tension that isn't completely explained and uneven at times and characters that just kind of disappear from the movie are examples. It's a movie that keeps your attention, but isn't innovating.

A bit slow and has some stupid character decisions, but when the actual wave comes, it's a little tense. But that was the best part honestly, which doesn't even last very long.

Best norwegian movie ever made. It does not have the special effect like similar movies like San andreas but it makes up for it with believeability and good acting. I was very impressed!

If only this film had resolved on a high note. The first three quarters of the film are pretty good, full of suspense, good storytelling, nice cinematography and fine acting, but then disaster strikes and the film descends into mostly unwatchable absurdity. What a shame to feel the need to stoop so low to close it out.

No better or worse than any of the Hollywood disaster films. It suffers from the disaster portion not occurring until half way into the runtime

Norway goes Hollywood with a what can only be described as a standard formula for a blockbuster 'disaster movie'.... and they actually pulls it off! Not the greatest special effects, but Kristoffer Joner and Co. deliver some quality performances and it's much less cheesy then, say, San Andreas (2015).

Norway goes disaster movie, substituting the San Andreas fault and millions of dead for an avalanche in a small town that threatens literally dozens of people. Good performances and a script that keeps a tight focus on the central characters (the obligatory nuclear family that must be brought back together) makes it a quite good (if predictable) movie for the first half, but it really drags towards the (predictable) end. Put this on a double bill with Force Majeure for maximum whiplash effect.
