Decent indie with no real highlights, except perhaps the feel-good aspect of the relationship between Rockwell and the kid (rather than Rockwell's comedy routine). The film is sort of cute without being aggressive about it and an okay way to waste some time. Harmless, but also short on merits.

The Way, Way Back was a great movie! While my favorite character was Sam Rockwell's, I would go as far to say that the whole cast did an awesome job in their roles. Downright excellent acting and writing. One of my favorite coming-of-the-age movies ever. Very entertaining and definitely worth watching.

Uneven and largely unwilling to extend itself and take the risks it sometimes sets up. But it does capture a bunch of little things rather well, and its pretty funny, especially the scenes involving Rockwell.

A lot of the themes in The Way, Way Back we've seen handled countless times and presented more effectively in other films, but one can't help but to love the performances put in by James and Rockwell. Great seeing Carell cast against type and totally nail it. The whole thing serves best as a lightweight American Beauty, with a solid feel good ending that sticks.

A somewhat by the numbers coming of age tale that is elevated by great performances led by the amazing Sam Rockwell. Liam James captures being an awkward, self-conscious teenager well and it's always nice to see Steve Carell not play a character who means well despite being a hapless idiot.

Since this is very tread ground in terms of topic you could easily say it's 'Adventureland' with splashes of 'Little Miss Sunshine' and 'Away We Go' thrown in. I didn't think I was enjoying it as much as I was, but when it ended I was kind of bummed out and really wanted more time with it. Rockwell really carries every scene he's in.

A familiar coming-of-age, but one with good performances all around. It has a very nice ending, ultimately making the film feel like a cool dip at the water park in the middle of all the stuffy atmosphere caused by much of the summer movies.

Has a nice vibe and atmosphere; downbeat and melancholy, but with uplifting beats. The performances are all good too, with Carell's against type effort the most notable. That said, I couldn't find any real reason to connect with the characters or truly invest in their relationships. Can best be described as being simply 'quite nice'.

The themes and set-up are so familiar that it almost feels like I've seen the movie before, sometimes. But despite that, it rises above a lot of other coming of age tales. With great performances all across the board, with an especially believable one by Liam James in the lead and Sam Rockwell who plays a lovable goof, The Way, Way Back explores territory that isn't original... but does it in such a way that it's funny and heart-warming. Try not to get a little choked up at some point during it.

Allison Janney and Sam Rockwell were each a LOT of fun to spend time with. Steve Carell was also good, though certainly not fun. For the most part it was a good movie, but there were a couple of pretty lazy parts--really cheesy stuff like the water-slide bit--that brought it down.

As he and his makeshift family drive away, he faces backward--looking back on Owen, the water slide, the summer, his past. But the station wagon keeps moving on, taking Duncan, Pam, Trent and Steph into a future that, like it or not, comes to us all. It's a touching conclusion and a poignant reminder of how much love and stability we all need as we grow up. It's less clear whether one needs to splash down into a movie like this in order to ponder that life lesson. (pluggedin.com)

As a "that one summer" coming-of-age story, it's really nothing you haven't seen before. But this one rings a little truer than most, due in part to a killer lead performance from Liam James, but also a level of honesty that permeates the work from top to bottom. Even comic relief characters like Faxon's still feel like real people I've worked with. Allison Janney is tons of fun, Carell is effective playing the asshole, and Sam Rockwell is a national treasure. God, I just love him in everything.

If you told me the plot of the movie without me seeing it I would know for a fact that Steve Carell was the water park manager and Sam Rockwell the mom's boyfriend. So the switch was interesting and paid off for both actors as they owned the roles. Carell is doing a better job than Carrey did trying to distance himself from stupid idiot roles (though he doesn't have his Eternal Sunshine yet). Highlight is the nuances of how awkward adults can be, especially around minors.

It's yet another indie coming-of-age film, and I only saw The Kings of Summer (2013) very recently, but I still liked this a lot. It captures that idealised American summer that I've never actually experienced, but kind of always wanted to. The cast is really good, with Sam Rockwell being the standout. The director/writer/actor team of Nat Faxon and Jim Rash did a fantastic job. It had some palpable emotional scenes, nice cinematography and I can easily recommend it.

The truth is that this film is almost all stuff we've seen before, but its pieces are so interesting that it manages to be pleasing and rewarding. Duncan's unexpected combination of down-in-the-mouth and what-have-I-got-to-lose is a winning characterization, and it's as easy to accept his moping around Trent's house as it is to see him do many out-of-character things in the water park, the site of his gradual emergence into his less-illusioned self.

This is a beautiful little movie about an anxious young boy who finds an unlikely friend in the loud and outgoing Owen, played brilliantly by Sam Rockwell. Steve Carell plays a very different role that what we're used to from him, and he does it startlingly well. Faxon & Rash created a coming-of-age film which, despite being set at the beach in summer, is the opposite of feelgood. This makes it an uneasy ride for the viewer, as you are put in the mood for some American Pie-style good times and funny moments, and the writers are continually denying you that. Once you get through it all, the denouement is remarkably mature, well-balanced and satisfying. A smartly-written film but frustratingly short on real enjoyment, intrigue, flair or appeal.

The filmmakers have the best intentions, but the slightness of 'Way, Way Back' provided little meat on a tender script. Coming-of-age stories always present great possibility, and while Jim Rash and Nat Faxon have a talented cast, an interesting assortment of characters, and moments filled with wit, the driving force is lacking here. It would be an easy film for most to commend, but comparing it to 'Perks of Being a Wallflower' leaves a lot to be desired out of this similarly themed dramedy.

The Way, Way Back pleasantly took me by surprise. It's simplistic and by no means ambitious, but it's a harmlessly enjoyable coming of age drama. All round the performances are impressive. In particular Sam Rockwell who steals the show and he provides all of the laughs to be had. His chemistry with Liam James certainly raises several heartwarming smiles. Also notably Steve Carrel convincingly gives a very different performance than we're used to from him. Overall this was a pleasant watch.

I liked this movie. The atmosphere was great and made me feel nostalgic despite having never been to Cape Cod for a summer. I couldn't stand Duncan at first; there is being a loner, being quiet, and being shy. Then there is being Duncan. Once he starts hanging out with Owen though he really picks up and I began to like him more. Weird seeing Carrell in a role where he isn't the funny guy, but he plays his character quite convincingly. Would love to see a spinoff with just the water park crew.

Kinda puny. It comes across as very written, very stagy--not a whole lot of spontaneous, meaningful or resonant moments here, just a minor-key version of the ever-familiar tale of a teenage boy who comes of age over a summer with the help of an ethereal blond chick. Generally sub-par acting, as well (save for Rockwell, who deserves an Oscar nomination), and a distractingly low budget. Didn't move me.

Gets better as it goes, with Janney and Rockwell being standouts for humor. Carell also gets to “shine“ as quite possibly his most annoying character, although I am appreciative of being able to see him against his usual comedic role. The Way Way Back doesn't try to showcase anything new, but instead presents a well-crafted, well-told, funny, moving, coming-of-age movie. While the film starts off on quite a depressing note, it seamlessly manages to blend in the humour via Rockwell's excellent performance, resulting in a perfectly balanced film. The cast does well to support the leads, though it would have been nice to see more of Corddry. Faxon and Rash are definitely a pair to continue watching.

I really dig these types of movies that present a lot of themes and developing maturity. I grew up with some of these themes present in my life, so I give it brownie points for capturing the situations well. Not to mention the inner struggle a lot of these characters face. Rockwell and Carell are the notable cast highlights, but it's safe to say this is just a really well crafted film that weighs heavily on a "coming of age" touch that serves it well. It's a nice little project.

Great cast. Especially young Liam James impressed me. He simply nails it as the miserable, introvert, quiet outsider that's being looked down on a lot and having a hard time figuring out life during adolescence. His character feels so real I actually felt empathy for the guy. Luckily for him a light starts shining his way as he's finding friends that treat him like an equal. Rockwell is great too. He's as charismatic as always and portrays a likable, feel-good character. I really dig this genre.

Sam Rockwell was the most satisfying character as the cool but reckless amusement park coordinator. It's always nice to see Toni Collette, but she was limited by the role. This movie is made for teens, & moderately entertaining for adults. Liam James & AnnaSophia Robb were great as the awkward, lovable teens. Steve Carell played the obnoxious cheating boyfriend well. Amanda Pete was under utilized. Mostly feel good, & sometimes humorous. Good music & production quality.

A mediocre adolescent-focused independent movie until Sam Rockwell arrives to thrill us with how much fun he's having, as he so often does. The water park scenes are pretty damn great, efficiently building a strong sense of place and community and making the park actually feel like the haven it serves as in the movie. The rest of the movie feels a bit stock and safe, and Liam James' performance is almost too reserved, limiting how much we can connect with him.

Most of the themes in this film are a rehashing of the typical genre themes, but something about The Way, Way Back seemed refreshing. It started with the awkward way in which Liam James carried himself, it was complimented by Steve Carrell's incredible range and the film really took off thanks to Sam Rockwell's charismatic performance. The ratio of likable/unlikable character screen time is way off. We spend a good 70% of the movie with insufferable, exhausting personalities, leaving little time for the lovely protagonist's story. Everyone remembers the day when they were young and thought how many things were unfair, we didn't understand, or did we? Sometimes there is no right or wrong, there is just life and people. The film portrays excessively well that feeling of misplacement, of discomfort in your own skin, the whats and whys of those days; Some characters are lovable, others are annoying but necessary, this combined with the fitting soundtrack takes you into the life as it is through the eyes of a 14 years old boy.

This is a formula that I'm growing tired of. A coming of age story about a lonely, brooding kid with family problems who loosens up when he meets some colourful characters during a summer vacation he'll never forget, all set to terrible indie music. With its star-studded cast, all of whom turn in great performances, on top of a well-balanced set of characters and a simple yet endearing narrative about family, coming-of-age, & making the best out of bad times, it's charming and authentic as well as pretty touching.
