Set in the Osaka theater world, the story is dominated by a self-righteous troupe leader (Roppa Furukawa) who bravely risks his popularity by selecting only plays that support the Japanese military cause, and who decides to break up the love affair between his star actor (Kazuo Hasegawa) and a shamisen player (Isuzu Yamada) in order to purify the actor's commitment to his craft. Mikio Naruse earlier works continue to underwhelm. I know most of his critically acclaimed films are from the 1950s and 60s, but he made a lot of films in the 30s & 40s too, and while some of them very good, most are very pedestrian and standard studio films without much screen magic. Shibaidô [The Way of Drama] (1944) is one of those. Basic straight-forward love story within a actor's environment. Perfectly fine and simple, but that's about it.
