Although not as moving as EAT DRINK MAN WOMAN, it has some really fun comic moments, cultural insight, strong characters, and a lot of charm. All of the Asian actors are terrific and endearing, especially the parents. The weak link in the cast is Lichtenstein, who comes off as bland and too much of a swell guy. There's something a little safe and sanitized about the whole thing, but it's respectful in its dealing with gay issues and overall is a pleasure to watch with a script that flows nicely.

Ang Lee's wedding comedy is a riot - full of hilarious moments while also proving to be surprisingly touching. The premise involves a gay Taiwanese man who marries a Chinese girl only to have his parents force a grand wedding banquet on them. All of the characters are widely varied with different motivations and the writers respect them enough to treat them as human beings and not just props for cheap laughs. Lee's talent for deftly handling a variety of genres is on full display.

Damn, Taiwanese parents really do be like that sometimes. A depressingly accurate depiction of the modern generational gap in Asia.

Very good romantic comedy that leans on the romance and a bit of drama, but still has a good number of amusing moments. It's genuineness of the script that really makes it work, though. Liked it much more than any other Ang Lee film I've seen.

Was probably ground-breaking in 1993, but looks pretty generic to modern eyes, at least the comedy-of-errors first half. And it's a little over-dramatic in the second, though it's an interesting tonal shift. Lee keeps it light and entertaining for most of its (slightly excessive) length despite some clunky pacing, though his now-notorious visual mastery is in short supply. So far his earliest films have been flat, ugly, and visually lifeless. I'm curious to find the period of transition.

The premise suggests the farcical hilarity ensues type of movie but it is so far from this. It's mostly a bittersweet and sentimental family drama with a little bit of a subtle deadpan comedy. Left me with thoughts about the value of a family and inevatibility of growing up and growing old more than "oh, hilarious", but nonetheless the city hall scene was funny as hell.

Banquete de casamento estreava há 30 anos nos EUA. Olha, achei tudo muito artificial aqui, não flui dramaticamente, mas no geral ainda se segura como uma comédia de costumes. RARBG.

This was a great movie. While some of the acting may not have been completely convincing, the dialogue and storyline, and the built-up tensions and consequent resolutions more than covered up for it. Funny combined with bittersweet and a lot of true-to-life. And having lived in China, I can say the cultural contextualisation was spot on. Some lovely vulnerability expressed by the characters at points. A self-unaware film that managed to incorporate humour and drama without sacrifice of either.
