The film's message is pretty obvious and not especially profound, one should marry for love. That aside, the story is pretty interesting with a nice balance of comedy and light drama. It stays true to itself from start to finish, which is a big plus. The film, while showing it's age is quite attractive visually, especially the Technicolor scene.

It feels like Stroheim is trying to turn a nice little story into some grand spectacle and really I'd prefer it if it was just left as a nice little story - I just find it a bit hard to engage with emotionally (it is moving, but not nearly as much as Sunrise, Lonesome, The Scarlet Letter and other silents). Still it is a beautiful piece of cinema, superbly put together and even if the grandness of it all is my problem with it I still appreciate the grandness...just kind of from a distance is all

A romantic tragedy with a plot as old as the hills, but von Stroheim knew how to handle it properly. Very pretty, and charming without being corny or stupid -- except when it's corny in a charming way, or stupid in a charming way. Much money was spent, but it was worth it. Yet another reason to see more of these wonderful old silents before they all melt to ashes

A blunt melodrama dealing with loveless marriages, but it's done in a way that you don't mind the lack of depth. Some of the scenes are gorgeous. Von Stroheim's creepy appearance suited him perfectly for Foolish Wives but here it doesn't work as well. I really wanted to see more of Zasu Pitts as well, she was the most tragic figure of them all in my opinion. I liked this movie a lot more than I thought I would. I was kind of bummed about it at first but it grew on me quite a bit.

Romance and irony, with a memorable finale. Like many of his other great films, it was taken from him and re-edited. Initially the first of two halves; the second, "The Honeymoon," has been lost. Next to "Greed," his most successful film.

Could barely follow. It's apparently ironic and sad, but I was too distracted by the awesome pageantry and falling flowers. Another unfinished von Stroheim.

Kind of meh for me, feels longer than it is. Was expecting for something to turn things around in the ending, so that not happening surprised me. There's a technicolor scene in it, but most is B+W. I don't think it'll be terribly memorable for me.
