The Werewolf

I'll try to say some nice things about this...the werewolf makeup is OK, and Steven Ritch gives a fun performance as the title character. My cat Gus seemed entertained and nearly watched the whole film before dozing off. Otherwise it's full of braindead characters making irrational decisions, bad acting (Don Megowan is a stiff, emotionless turd) and a predictable plot despite the slightly original take on the werewolf story. I can't deny that it has some cheesy charm, though.

The first half of the film has an excellent film noir feel and uses off screen action very well for the violent scenes. After the mid point the director and DP seemingly ran out of ideas and the rest of the film is more plain and unimaginative in its blocking. The screenplay was bare bones lacking in either suspense or fun so there's little else going for it. Without any solid actors the drama just fizzles. Not much to recommend here besides some good Werewolf makeup and the first dynamic half.

This works as both a werewolf flick and a film noir movie about a poor guy who ends up being turned into a monster. The second flick in the Cold War Creatures boxset, this one is actually underrated.
