Sion has created a stark retro-futuristic vision that vaguely recalls other films but functions effectively on its own narcotic wavelength. Its minimalist design is elegantly rendered, and the scene of the robot woman walking down a dark corridor lit by silhouettes of human activity behind barriers is one of the most striking set pieces in recent film. Both information and significance rely on a material support, and perhaps both can be grasped only in terms of a (pro)tension stretched between intensities, but only the latter truly finds the source of its singular, incalculable possibility in a necessary default that constantly requires a constitutively late and yet performatively anticipatory process of adoption.
