Long and boring story. Some okay costums, but they did not carry the entire movie, did it. Madeleine Daly was only to have something to act.

The last of the Merchant Ivory films. Not great, but a worthwhile story

More evidence--as if we needed it--that pretty sets and costumes cannot carry an entire (endless) movie.

A sad and underwhelming end for the Merchant/Ivory partnership.

Natasha Richardson is radiant in this depiction of a fallen Russian aristocrat reduced to working in a bar to help her antiquated family survive. She works for a blind nightclub owner and they all end up on the run when the Japanese invade China. Performances were mostly restrained with hardly any good break out moments. I enjoyed it, but not much particularly spectacular happens so it feels a bit hollow and slow. This material should have produced a much better movie.

Looks gorgeous, but the story is fairly bland.
