More about the Count than you'd expect. Gets an impressive gravity from the PRC sets. Ulmer's camera constantly pulls alongside foreground elements like pillars to anchor everyone in space, and the exteriors have a crisp lighting scheme, clearly defined black abysses. Watchable minor effort.

More elegance than I'm used to from PRC, and Edgar Ulmer does a professional job. Doesn't mean I cared much for it. I found it even poorer than the Colombia Pictures released The Return of Monte Cristo (1946), which was already a lesser Monte Cristo in that series. They scooped-up John Loder, which was a decent catch, and they almost miraculously got Hedy Lamarr as well, but they ended up having to go with her friend Lenore Aubert, which was not a bad choice, but still made it less interesting.
