Could Mallory have succeeded in reaching the summit before he and fellow climber Andrew Sandy Irvine disappeared in 1924? In the quest for answers, Conrad Anker finally returns to Everest in 2007 with British climbing prodigy Leo Houlding, replicating as closely as possible Mallorys ill-fated expedition. The men retrace the North East Ridge Route, even removing the ladder from the infamous Second Step to free climb this dangerous 90-foot sheer rock wall as Mallory did 83 years ago. (imdb)

I think that even to a "regular" viewer, the movie suceeds in bringing that golden age of exploration to life. Watching the story unfold, you can feel the glory & sensation that still existed back then and undoubtedly hooked Mallory. Precisely this feeling of adventure is still the main reason people climb mountains nowadays (at least I do), and the problems between Ruth & George are still very actual among climbers today (as it happens with Conrad). A true hommage to an inspiring explorer!

Sure, some of the line readings of letters are hokey and Conrad Anker's desire to summit Everest under the same conditions as Mallory might have might be silly, but it's a fascinating look at ambition and humankind's desire of conquest. It doesn't all hit, and it may feel stagey at times, but the history elements are very interesting and it flies at a smooth clip.
