The Wind

okay movie

Not a remake of the Sjöström classic, but definitely a distant cousin, using virtually the same setting and basic starting point to get to somewhere entirely different. Sets itself up very nicely and Tammi is in good control of the narrative despite the numerous flashbacks, but ultimately the plot lets it down once things start to get revealed. Promising debut, though.

The establishing shots, photography, cinematography, etc were beautiful. But the acting was stiff. The dialogue was unnatural. The four main characters were unrealistically young. Too much time spent in boring, redundant flashbacks. Mostly bad pacing throughout (e.g. the first 10 minutes were different scenes of the exact same event rehashed different ways). Move on already. I kept asking myself "When's the movie going to start?" Also, the tone kept shifting to silly horror for no good reason.

The plot is terribly confused and vague due to overlapping storylines. The only thing it truly achieved is the sickening feeling of loneliness and boredom while living in a lifeless prairie. The movie is a wasteland in itself. My SCORING: 99-96=Great; 95-90=Very good; 89-85=Good; 84-80=So-so; 79-70=Boring; Below 70=Forget it.

It has an effective setup, good acting, and a couple of nice scares, but loses its momentum by the third act. Still worth the watch.

It has some few arresting moments of atmospheric horror, but it never clicks in its intention of combining folk, western horror with character development - despite Gerard's performance. Motherhood -- or the loss of it - as a curse in the isolated prairies of the mid-west, where there is a shapeshifting presence haunting pregnant women -- first, the brave German-born who was living there alone with her husband; then the young woman who moves in later and starts the movie dead of apparent suicide

I don't know if I've ever been as disappointed in a good movie. I am in love with this conceptually, visually. What a vivid rendering of an oppressive landscape, the wide open spaces which leave plenty of room for unrelenting anguish, imagined or not. A potential folk horror masterpiece which is critically undermined by its language and performances, which ring so inauthentic as to be actively distracting. Why do these characters speak and behave as if this movie isn't set two centuries ago?

Sinematografi çok iyi. Yavaş akan ve sevdiğim tarzda zaman çizelgesine sahip. Ama bunlar yeterli olmuyor.

38. İstanbul Film Festivali - Rexx.

Exemplary cinematography and soundscape, but very little substance. After seeing the original, the lackadaisical atitude toward period dialects is a little jarring--the characters too often sound like they're from a SoCal teen drama. Speaking of which, the overall acting is really nothing to write home about--combine that with its schizophrenic timeline and ultimately, the twists and turns just cease to matter. I just didn't care about anyone involved toward the end.

Nearly impossible to match it's inspiration, the silent classic of the same name from 1928, which was a intense film. The 2018 adaptation has it's moments, but doesn't really touch the same nerve with it's more vague storytelling. Nice try, though.

I guess I just didn't get it.

The story is uninteresting, the script isn't good, the shots are uninspired; I didn't care for it.
