Good and fun, but not great. It falls somewhere in the middle of the X-Men universe films, certainly ahead of the previous Wolverine film. Its strength was bringing a more realistic version of Wolverine and developing his character. The biggest problem was the finale, which was just a fight with a boring CGI robot (the Silver Samurai). You could almost feel the studio execs forcing that finale into the script. Make sure to stay for the post-credits sequence.

Logan makes a comeback after the huge disappointment that was X-Men Origins. The Wolverine is just a fun action movie that benefits from strong visual stylings and cool set-pieces. The story gets bogged down by a ridiculous villain and plot twists that are too obvious, but the things that work - the Japanese setting and the likability of the Wolverine character - at least make for an entertaining comic book film.

Not very good. But I'll watch Hugh Jackman in anything and he might as well act in these formulaic scenes as read the phonebook out loud or something (just as) stupid like that, I suppose. And the film is, after all, a far cry better than the abomination that was the origin story.

(Spoilers) Decent. The "twist" is predictable a mile away, and is played as a "huge surprise" which is a big pet peeve of mine. Bogged down by a messy and poorly paced plot, completely unnecessary stuff like Japanese characters speaking English to one another with no non-Japanese characters around, and a subvillain that serves only to remind us all of Poison Ivy in Batman & Robin whenever she's on screen - and no one need be reminded of that film. Great action direction and sets.

It's a hell of a lot better than Origins, though that's as backhanded a compliment as you can get. It looks good, sounds good and has some one-note mid-level bosses. The Viper girl is an exposition machine and Mariko's father is as bland as they come. It's still fun, though. Setting it apart from movies like Iron Man 3, it is its own movie and is not dependent on the movie before or following it to be successful. Superhero franchises need more of that.

Unbelievably, Hollywood continues to fuck this franchise up. The character and comic needs little work to adapt yet they had to add the most laughable twists and needless effects ever in this. For instance why would you waste CGI money on a hospital bed? A rather shitty bullet train sequence? Or the grand finale (which I had to refrain from pissing myself with laughter) with the corny 1980's ROBOCOP 2 ERA SAMURAI ROBOT SUIT? WHY?!? Just follow the goddamn original comic and it'd be great.

Juvenile, I expected (although the Japanese setting/motifs added exponentially to this), but I was surprised by how fucking dull this is. It employs essentially every standard comic-book plot element but does absolutely nothing interesting with them. I'm going on a plane tomorrow and this better not be the last movie I see.

A very decent superhero romp that neither stretched its scope needlessly, nor overstayed it's welcome. And I found it to be a refreshing change to have some action sequences with actual pain and tension, most of which involved mortal human opponents no less, kudos for that. Also had a strange deja vu concerning "The Big Sleep", maybe because the plot made about as much sense, but that didn't really bother me.

I really liked this a lot better than the last Wolverine movie, this sequel to the X-Men franchise is a pretty good superhero movie. James Mangold did a fine job with it. The Wolverine is great for it's visuals but also it's characters and a surprisingly good script. Give it a shot. Also, Jackman still fits the role perfectly. Supporting cast is good too. Good movie.

Hugh Jackman, as usual, was the only thing half-way decent about this film. I sincerely wish Darren Arnofsky would have been able to make his schedule and personal life fit this films' original shooting schedule. Then, this review would likely be a whole lot different. As it is, James Mangold delivered my biggest disappointment of the summer. The story was silly, didn't even really make sense, and the action was shot in a very forgettable way. Nothing new brought to the table here, sadly.

Almost-- great? How!? The fact that this had so potential is the most impressive thing. There's a certain point where it hits you - this movie is really only pretending to be about Wolverine. It's constructed entirely around a Japanese family's legacy. Which is pretty cool. But the action sequences are incomprehensible. It's not impressionism - it's nonsense. At first I was like, whoa, I really care. And then I was like, who I really don't. Roll credits.

A lot more mature than the previous X-Men (bar First Class) entries, which is a breath of fresh air after Origins. It's a lot shallower than the writers clearly believe, and Mangold can't direct action for shit, but thankfully it all looks nice and is engaging. However, it all falls apart in the final act and descends into ridiculous bullshit territory. The signs of lessening quality began at the lines; "Who are you?" "The Wolverine!" and steadily grew worse. Post-credits scene was rad.

It's an improvement over the Wolverine prequel, but a big, big step down from First Class. It has an eye on character development, which is admirable but makes for an often dull second act. A couple action scenes are pretty cool, but the climax goes too silly (even for an X-Men movie). It romantically pairs Hugh Jackman up with one actress when he clearly has more onscreen chemistry with another, and there's WAY too many Jean Grey dream sequences.

How do you kill someone that cannot be killed? In Wolverine's case you put him in a movie that's over two hours. Someone thought that two hours wasn't enough Wolverine. You know why the X-Men movies suck? Even their most interesting character does not warrant a two hour movie. My thoughts on Bob Seger are that he writes excellent three minute songs. It's a shame they're all five minutes long.

Pretty solid until the last act, where the whole thing kinda comes off the rails and throws anything resembling logic out the window. Despite the relative lack of cgi bullshit and the use of real live action stunts through most of the film, they just couldn't resist a goddamn final showdown with a pointless cgi monster. Ugh.

God damnit, Jackman in Wolverine is a role and character that CAN NOT hold a movie. PLEASE let this be the final proof showing just that. So emotionless, so straight forward its sickening. Substituting some welcome estrogen & characters with conflicts existing outside of the franchise's eternally-sullen badass for the first film's parade of tesosterone-dripping tough-guys, it's no wonder this seems like an improvement. Unfortunately this doesn't avoid its predecessor's penchant for allowing slavish adherence 2 fomula to disrupt an organic narrative. Not only do plotholes form, but by the 3rd act otherwise-comprehensible character motivations almost disappear.

It starts with a nice WWII sequence followed by a cool forest scene. Then, An American director trying to shoot a Japanese movie part creates a lot of awkwardness but after a lot of flipping and flapping the movie finds its voice. The viper character was very weak and did not add much to the story, and the Silver Samurai parts were a bit of a stretch, but Jackman is still excellent as Wolverine and Japanese actors/actresses gave very good performances also.

A very pleasant surprise, compared not only to its lackluster predecessor but also to the rest of the X-Men films. The difference in tone is remarkable and works in its favour. Hugh Jackman excels in what is his most personal portrayal of Wolverine, whereas the action is brilliant, occasionally entering fist-pumping territory. In truth, "The Wolverine" does show its duration (although it never becomes tedious) and doesn't end on the highest of notes, yet arguably remains the best of the bunch.

Much like The Dark Knight it's successful because it takes a recognisable and workable genre piece (in this case it's the old American Vet returns to an Asian country to help an old friend and gets tied up in a family/crime story) and sticks a superhero in the middle of it. Slow, sombre, and even a little gritty, it's one of the few recent superhero flicks I wish I had caught on the big screen. That doesn't mean it's a great film - but definitely one of the best of a very bad bunch.

If there is one thing that "The Wolverine" absolutely nails, it is the characterization of the title character. The film does a great job of fleshing out Logan's struggles with his immortality and the fact that he had to kill the woman he loved. The film also nails the action scene on top of the bullet train; it is exciting, unique and funny. Outside of these aspects, things are kind of a mess. The villains are some of the weakest I've seen and the plot is mediocre. Very middle of the road.

This was a very pleasant surprise to say the least. To be honest, I never really cared to watch the X-men/Wolverine movies, but this movie is exactly the kind of movie that makes me want to. Everything just worked here. It has a great tone, Jackman kills it as Wolverine and the setting (Japan) is excellently used. The action scenes felt very real and intense, and there's a perfect balance between a gritty TDK-ish tone and a more comic-y approach. A great popcorn superhero movie.

I don't know I liked it well enough but the overly cliched use of Japanese stereotypes kind of killed it for me, well that, and the somewhat crappy action set pieces and lame saw-it-coming-from-a-mile-away ending.

The movie starts out as a vast improvement over the 2009 one but starts degrading after less than an hour - and the extended version is 137 minutes long! It starts by showing every cliché about Japan, before moving on to every cliché in action movies. The dialogue, plot and twists become utterly predictable. The movie takes itself way too seriously and it just gets boring. The giant samurai robot didn't work in Turtles 2 and it certainly doesn't work here. Please, no more.

[Extended Cut] - This one ain't going for subtlety, but that's not out of place for the character in question - and in between a few quite enjoyable action-sequences, there are time for some character-substance as well - and this smaller scope superhero-film is refreshing after too many big bad blockbusters. *Preview*: #13#, popcorn, hype, story, director Mangold/1, (cast), R3.

Human side of Wolverine. I don't see the plot having any semblance of relation with the earlier X-Man movies, which comes as a rather surprise. Might be they wanted this to be a stand-alone film. And if that is, it gets more than the pass mark. In fact, it manages to come out as a remarkably able X-Man movie, inflicted with a human touch and human greed. It would be interesting to see where they take it from here.

This movie was better than Origins, but is just ok. It honestly proably ignored/changed about as much of the sorce material as Origins did, but this movie at least had a competently written story, and it didn't really ruin any characters like Origins did. If you just want to see Hugh Jackman beat up bad guys as Wolverine, this is a decently entertaining movie. Just don't expect anything more than a decent action movie.

I thought this was the best X-Men movie. The action was inspired and brutal, and the plot was a lot of fun - Wolverine's inclusion in what feels like a modern samurai film manages to not be a distraction and is actually a lot of fun. From Wolverine outrunning Nagasaki to fighting atop a bullet train to some actually pretty great quiet character moments, this is actually well wroth watching. (Also: watch the director's cut. It fixes some of the problems with the theatrical.)

This movie was about par for the course with the other Wolverine based movies. I had trouble figuring out Wolverine's motivation to carry the plot forward early on in the film, and then I wasn't sure who I was supposed to be rooting for. Wolverine's mortality didn't convey the urgency of his character, and he seemed to be kinda slow on the uptake. Still, it had some interesting characters, and it was nice to see a Japanese cast in a mainstream American film.

Unquestionably a massive step-up on Origins, and from a character stand-point it makes an interesting case for the events of X3 to not be tossed out of continuity. For a big summer blockbuster this is surprisingly pared-down and focussed on character, which is a welcome relief. It is entirely predictable however, though Mangold ensures it's still very well-made and visually interesting. The post-credits sting is almost better than the movie. I was so hungry for nabeyaki udon after watching this.

While I don't believe this is a great movie, it's okay. It does put Wolverine in a unique setting, and rather interesting plot. However, I find the excution to be mediocre at best. There were times I felt the movie dragged along at some points and I didn't find myself interested in anyone besides Wolverine. The action sets were filmed quite well, the effects were decent, and overall everyone had a good performances, but something was missing for me. A step up from Origins for sure.

Well, finally a watchable solo X-Men feature. Not actually the stand-alone actioner of our dreams -- Jean is there the whole time haunting Logan and the extra scene, a great one actually, points to a sequel --, but the fact that is possible to hear three shits and one fuck during its running time just makes this the proper macho, violent, grim, sexy, samurai-like superhero movie we were waiting for. Nice mortal-man-on-the-run version of Wolverine.

Of all the possible concepts for a Wolverine movie within the X-Men universe, resolving a Japanese family feud is probably the most ill-conceived. When filmmakers take on a superhero film I assume they flip a coin to see whether this is one where the hero loses his power or the baddies somehow mimics his powers. Problem is, it's a drama about a Canadian woodcutter on a holiday in Japan. What starts off interesting quickly tumbles into a convoluted mess, ending in a CGI battle with a giant samurai robot. Looking back on it, it's pretty basic and clichéd, just poorly woven to the point of being confusing. Logan's struggle with grief and guilt over Gene also feels like an unnecessary tie-in to the former films, having little to no bearing on the main narrative. Thankfully, James Mangold took another shot at this and we ended up with 'Logan'.

Not really one to get worked up about geopolitics in mainstream film, but it's kind of hard to ignore that fact that an American movie opens up by making a PG-13ized spectacle out of the bombing of Nagasaki. No human suffering, just Wolverine being a badass because he survives the explosion. I didn't even think Rhapsody in August was required Kurosawa viewing but now it seems necessary. The Wolverine might not be a superb action film -- the action is passable; it's nothing to write home about -- but it does bring some much-needed depth to the character of Wolverine. This is a smaller, more intimate movie about its titular character, and it works well as a solo film and in setting up something bigger. Wolverine goes through a rather large arc here, and it's fun to watch it play out, even if the final fight does devolve into CGI overload.

Exceptional action film deserves to stand with the best comic book adaptations of all time -- both within and outside the 'X' universe. Beautifully and atmospherically filmed; the risky gambit of isolating Wolverine from the usual X universe pays off in spades, adding a genuine depth and mystique to the character, aided by Jackman's commanding performance. Leaps and bounds ahead of its predecessor, yet not even a Rhesus monkey could screw up a script by McQuarrie and Frank so that's not saying much. Like a bad wedding reception, the film is also way too long and I could've gone without Japanese Johnny 5 but it does offer some pleasurable jolts, mostly in the form of a sexy red haired Rila Fukushima kicking major butt and Wolverine chopping up Yakuza gangsters left and right. I'm a man of simple tastes, so sue me.

Watching Mangold's The Wolverine makes me realize that I would care much more for this unending onslaught of superhero films if they remain as self-contained and character-driven as this film was up until its atrociously botched ending. Giant robot samurai? Seriously? What a way to ruin a perfectly good film.

It's the same comic book action movie that keeps getting made by so many people. Suffers from the horrible, horrible exoticization and fetishization of other cultures. It's also not really an X-Men or Wolverine movie - it's more like an episode from a hypothetical TV show about Wolverine where he goes and does a monster-of-the-week type thing.

Not bad I guess, though it gets repetitive and doesn't really make much sense. Some of the fight scenes are kind of fun.

If you're looking for the first genuinely good Wolverine film, you'll just have to keep on waiting. It's unfortunate, as Wolverine is one of the more interesting of superheroes.

Leaps and bounds better than "X-Men Origins: Wolverine"(2009) this films does a far better job grounding the character in a more realistic world. The character of Wolverine has the potential for telling mature stories about trauma, and not only the solider on the battlefield but the story of when he survives to come back home. Unfortunately the film fails to do anything with its mess of a script, but add weak side characters with regularly scheduled action with a schlock robot samurai finale.

The Wolverine might be the best "X-Men" movie ever. It doesn't rely on the hokiness of the previous films, and while it respects the previous canon to a degree, it does a wonderful job telling its own story. This is the Wolverine movie fans have dreamed about for decades. Jackman has once again proven that he understands Wolverine and is one of the most perfect fits for a character since Christopher Reeve as Superman. When you watch Jackman on the screen, you believe it.

Very comic story kind of running. I never was very much into superhero comics and was never interested of this story line until it came as a movie. The story did not offer much of surprises and I was not always pleased the effects. But I enjoyed Hugh Jackman as the Wolverine.

Wolverine: Tokyo Drift. Whereas Toyko Drift was the best film of the franchise, this is a middling to bad X-Men movie. Wouldn't have thought it was so hard to make a good Wolverine movie but apparently it is.

I like it but it is unimpressive. I prefer Wolverine in the X-Men context. I love his interactions with those people.

At least I enjoyed this. I detested Origins. Honestly I'm also a little burnt out on Wolverine. He's an interesting and wonderful character but there's so much focus on him (understandably, but still), that it kind of takes me out of it a bit. Oh well, this is a solid flick, good comic book entertainment. Interesting, good action sequences, and Wolverine -- despite what I just said -- is still a badass.

Wolverine: Tokyo Drift should have been set this in the 1980s, and had more Uzi-wielding Yakuza in suits.
