Diaz is a classicist artist of grand-narratives who forms big sentences about his country, politics, history and metaphysical themes. However, most of his films are only relying on his idiosyncratic form and duration instead of trying to deepen their dramatic structure and narrative layers. Diaz seems to enjoy his 3rd world rightfulness and exploits it to the point of pain-porn in a didactic moralism. Using long takes, B&W cinematography and victimizing all characters doesn't make a film good.

The performance of the year in Diaz's new adaptation of Russian literature. A bit schemed to exactly get to places we already know -- the revenge on the former lover who framed her for 30 years in jail will not be executed in classic ways -- but either way powerful on how Diaz chooses impressionist images to frame her encounters with the marginalized and forgotten (a trans, a hobo, a hunchback seller, a group of homeless people). Also a social drama about collateral effects.

I felt Lav Diaz work lost it's authenticity using mainstream actors here. While it's really interesting seeing these actors go outside of their fames screen personas, one can't help but feel Diaz had to rush, not getting the perfect shots to capture the moments. Didn't get to tweak the dramatic mood. You still had the great Diaz mindset of long framed black and white shots letting reality sink in. It's absolutely a rewarding experience, just not as rewarding as some of Diaz's other works.
