The Women on the 6th Floor
Paris in 1960. Jean-Louis and Suzanne Joubert are no longer exactly youthful. This stockbroker and his wife live a quiet, middle-class existence in an elegant tenement building. You might even describe their lives as dull - especially since the children have been packed off to boarding school. Things are a good deal livelier on the sixth floor of their building where all the female staff live. (berlinale.de)

An interesting film but one that exploits the catchy "intellectual" theme of working vs. upper class in the form of servants vs. masters to bring to the forefront a rather trite love story. In the end, the social commentary is completely left out of the film's focus and nothing new gets said: the love story is cute but unoriginal and the attempts to delve into Chabrolian depths of socio-political analysis simply showcase why Chabrol was such a genuine and stunning talent.

"There's nothing remarkable going on in Jean-Philippe Le Guay's pillowy, Vicodin pill of a film." - Kalvin Henely
