Psychotherapeutic explanations, fashionable revelations of abuse, the struggle of a no-nonsense female against the nonsense of powerful old males, and some of the line readings: all come across as a bit anachronistic, projections of contemporary concerns and perspectives. And it really has become all-too-predictable that this kind of protagonist will turn out to be grieving the loss of a young child. As in ROOM, the reflexive preoccupation with stories and names makes it a bit more interesting.

Its framing is interesting but pointless - even worse because its agent is a non-character and its message, the power of stories, is not its strongest theme - but Cassidy and Pugh center the film with strong performances and its harrowing plot compels, though it moves, perhaps, a little too slowly.

The trendy big reveal is seen coming from the onset, so the only surprise is how far this movie deteriorates otherwise, before reaching its profoundly tasteless final shot. The protagonist is an unblemished saint, of which other (especially male) characters are both inexplicably dismissive and weirdly tolerant considering the patriarchal times. The dialogue largely sounds like a bland modern netflix show with an accent, certainly not 19th century Ireland, and many bits compete for cheesiest.

It drags a little, but when it kicks it up in the final half it extracts some emotional depth, though given the subject matter, I feel like it should have had more of an impact on me than it did. There's some unnecessary distance exhibited. Pugh is quite good here, but I don't agree that it's a brilliant performance, like I've been seeing elsewhere. That's no hate, she is easily the best part of this movie. This is shot well, Lelio deserves some credit. I like how the film is bookended as well.

While nothing is outright terrible, nothing really works outside of the usually reliable Florence Pugh performance. The movie has an interesting premise, but the screenplay is just so simple, heavy handed, trite, and contrived. The love interest feels completely shoehorned in. The framing device is completely unnecessary, and frankly somewhat laughable. Despite all of that it's not terrible. It's just very obvious and shallow. You should feel more then ok skipping this one.

I think the framing device is more a distraction than anything else. The "enemy" of this film: religion and patriarchal morons are kind of boring and simplistic but how they are "defeated" is actually quite interesting and worked very well for me.

Solid efforts all round but it's Pugh's movie through and through.

Pugh is excellent as always, and it's an intriguing setup with a lot of dirt in it. But once the inevitable reveal sets in and the heroes are separated from the villains, it feels both a wee bit too simple and a lot too condescending - basically, everyone here really is the way the villagers in The Wicker Man just pretend to be. And that first-year-of-film-school framing device is... nah.

This is a well directed and really well acted film, although with some parts I didn't get, especially the 4th wall idea. I don't know why it was implemented. Pugh was as amazing as always and the subject just sucked me in. It was a good watch.

En fait, pour résumer : la religion, c'est un peu de la merde non ? Beaux décors et Florence Pugh, qui si elle n'est pas à son meilleur, n'a plus rien à prouver. Un peu lent néanmoins.

Well-acted and produced, but this is probably not for everyone. Overall, a bleak and slow-paced period piece, It was right up my alley though, and it had some surprises towards the end.

A very compelling story about religious indoctrination and guilt. My biggest gripe is that I was completely taken out by the fourth wall breaking. The fourth wall camera pans worked visually. As a narrative trick is was impactful. BUT it still reminded me that all the characters are actors and nothing is real, it is all sets. That's not exactly the mental state I want to be when trying to be engrossed by a tale, be it fictional or not.

Boring. The only wonder is why this movie was made. I watched it until the end and found nothing compelling or redeeming. A waste of money, a waste of talent, and a waste of time.

While a few plot points really don't work, it was easy to get past that due to the philosophical questions and ideas it explores. Through a beautiful period setting, this adaptation brings up modern questions of self-reflection, such as -- what sacrifices do we justify simply because of what we believe?

"The Wonder" provides a thematically rich and engaging story backed by strong performances and impressive technical craftsmanship. While the romance and supporting cast leave something to be desired, the film's portrayal of a conflict between faith and science is handled deftly, creating a cautionary tale about the power of religion and a Gothic heroine determined to change the narrative.

Ultimately the narrative frame was a little heavy handed, but still an interesting prompt on the power of stories. the patriarchal and religious "antagonist" is pretty standard, but also allows it to ring true.

Familiar anti religion themes cast their shadow, but perhaps the blind faith has never been more maddening. That is praise for the movie. But overall there is nothing much to see or pique ones interest.

An objectively bad film, but I really enjoyed it. Bar my confusion surrounding the mother. I was drunk though.
