The setting is perfect for Jia Zhangke's thematic obsessions and the cinematography feels more accomplished than any of his previous films. Heartbreaking in stretches and subtly moving in others. I'm not sure about the usage of animation throughout. The ending I found tangential to what the film had worked up to at that point - it could've earned so many other possible scenarios for a finale. Despite this, the final shot (like so many others preceding it) is jaw-droppingly beautiful.

strange key changes throughout. although these do not necessarily detract, they distract. the park and the ecologies scattered within it by 贾樟柯 embody adjusted tonalities along the spectrum of culture shock between cities, countries, and class divides.

Visually unassuming, the smartly framed wide angle cinematography plays perfectly to the film's thematic content and made for a pleasurable viewing experience. Some of the interpersonal relationships, however, were lost on me, as I had trouble keeping track of who was who and what happened to who, when. #notracist

Not a huge fan of this meandering style, and feel it was done better in something like Gummo. I was disappointed by this as I loved A Touch of Sin by the same director. This has some great ideas and scenes, but its quite dull and takes a long time to sit through.

Hard to follow. I ended up reading a synopsis after watching it just to clarify a few things. It's an okay story, I was hoping it would say more but maybe I just needed to be in touch with modern Chinese society more.

The title promises much, but the film remains maddeningly elusive. Despite a pace that allows one to ponder the significance of every shot or exchange in dialogue, most of the scenes go nowhere, idly picking at themes of disconnection in the modern age of technology that is supposed to make the world a smaller place. If there's a grand summation being made by the frankly bizarre ending, I'm missing it.

I could watch Jia Zhangke's meditations on modern China for 5 hours, let alone 2 hours and 20 minutes. Running time = not a problem for this.

I think I get it. It has great moments and pathos, but is somewhere between Indie films and Art films, with all the turn-offs of both.

Incredible photography. A slow but fascinating portrait of a rapidly modernizing China that evokes the mood of bewilderment I imagine many people feel toward it. Full of subtle and not-so-subtle statements about the value of money, technology and alienation, uneven modernization, and the shallowness of modern life.

While it's technically interesting and quite gorgeous, asking your audience to stay with one dimensional characters for two-and-a-half hours is a risk that doesn't pay off in this film.

A confused jumble of stuff. The worst part is that all this is done at the expense of an interesting plot or strong characters. Not entirely without merit, but too messy to recommend.
