Continuation of Fukasaku's tale of shifting alliances and treacherous murders amongst postwar yakuza in Hiroshima. This chapter is more coherent and even bloodier than the last, and features a completely over-the-top Sonny Chiba as the psychotic son of a boss out to kill his way to the top of the underworld. The fights in this flick are absolute bedlam...jarring scattershot images of gunfire, confusion, and gore.

While I do not personally think this is a better film than the first, I understand why it's a regular favorite: Chiba's unrecognizable as a Stray Dog overcompensating by swinging around his oversized, um, sword; Kitaoji has a full, one-movie arc; and Meiko Kaji. In a series dominated by men and a radioactive, mutating masculinity, Kaji is the series' only strong female lead, and this means she stands at the top of the (dung) heap.

It's more focused, and that makes it better.

An improvement on the original because of more focus, less characters -- thus meaning more attention paid to the ones that exist -- and better violence. It's still a little confusing at times because there are still quite a few people, but you get the gist of it eventually. The violence is still incredibly gory and almost disgusting at times, and watching these alliances form and crumble is a treat. Chiba is incredible as an over-the-top killer who is a complete badass.

A nice improvement over the first thanks to a smoother story, a slightly smaller cast (though it's still pretty huge) and Sonny Chiba being all kinds of goddamn awesome. The links to part 1 were nice, I hope the series keeps up the world building aspect.

This film is berserk and I kind of love it. On the one hand, it tells a fairly complex story of warring gangster factions and has a dry voice over that frequently kicks in to introduce one of the dozens and dozens of characters and explain the plot. On the other hand, all of the performances are pitched to the rafters and frenzied, gory violence breaks out constantly with little provocation.
