Public outcry compels the police to crack down on yakuza violence, forcing Hirono and Yamamori to adopt sneakier methods of killing each others men. More of the same hysterical violence and dense plotting in this ongoing epic crime tale. Fukasaku's camera captures such intense kinetic energy on screen that these films can almost be wearying to watch, but very rewarding.

The viewer that has come this far into the series knows what to expect by now, and part 4 delivers more of the same. That's not a bad thing though. The plot and all the betrayals/alliances are a lot easier to follow this time, and it ends in an interesting way.

I've given every film a 90 except for the first, which got an 85, and there's good reason for that. Firstly, the quality is exceptional but secondly, these films don't change from one another very much. They start the same -- explaining what has happened -- and then end with something interesting that makes you want to watch the next. 4 actually has a bit more closure and emotion than the previous ones I felt, and the major conflict between police and Yakuza is thrilling.

As with the other films in this series there is way too much narration. This was a fairly standard entry in the series that suffered a bit from not having any standout performances. The frenetic pacing and action is still really strong in this outing and there is a bit more humor than in some of the previous entries.

As the title suggest the police (finally) becomes a force to reckon with also in this entry in the series. Cracking down on the yakuza after public pressure because of all the violence. What makes this one slightly differ from the previous entries, is that after all the scheming before in this one it's all out war, which make this one more action packed. But mostly it's more of the same. If you liked the previous installments you most likely will like this one as well.

These Yakuza Papers films remind me of the two Seijun Suzuki films I have seen, in that it's confusing as all hell, but there is so much style and energy in every scene that it is just a lot of fun to watch, despite anything else.
