The Year My Voice Broke

Hard to say if this coming-of-age drama does a good job at capturing a 1960s Aussie childhood. It's certainly far removed from any childhood I had, but then it would be. It does capture something universal about youth, boys and girls and the awkwardness of trying to be cool or at least fit in. I found the precocious development of the characters, and their ferality a little harder to believe though. It didn't even hit me until the end credits that this skinny kid was wrinkly old Ben Mendelsohn.

Coming of age story that is so uninteresting that the only thing I can remember is that the main character looks a lot like Nick Cave. That's not something to boast, though. There's a reason that most movies made in the land down under don't make it out of the country, this fits snugly into the large, badly made segment of those movies.
