'Tie a Yellow Ribbon' Japanese style...you'd think it's be thin but it avoids that by telling an interesting tale. Yes, the ending could be said to be predictable hokum but it still sorta grabs. There's far worse watches than this, I was with the bus passengers at the end.

Think of Bergman's Wild Strawberries, stripped of all religious pretense, where the issue is not Death but the post-war emasculation of the Japanese Male. Moments of hokey melodrama (mostly an issue with film score) don't detract from quite a weeper of an ending, and one that retains quite a bit of class. It's no wonder this is classic in its own way.
