Most Capra movies have a saccharine style ending. But this one was sad sad.

The silent parts are much better than the sound parts.

A halfbreed. The movie, that is. Part silent (w/ soundtrack) and part talkie, with Frank Capra managing to mix the two nicely even if the sound portion was forced in on the original plan. But even with the experiment Capra touches on that emotional nerve of immigrants and the importance of family. Jean Hersholt acts beautifully as the old fashioned father clashing with his sons ambitious social lifestyle with Ricardo Cortez putting on a human sleaze bag role who 'gets it' a little too late.
