Louise is working in a fast food restaurant as a waitress and has some problems with her friend Jimmy, who, as a musician, is always on the road. Thelma is married to Darryl who likes his wife to stay quiet in the kitchen so that he can watch football on TV. They decide to go to Mexico, but soon they are hunted by American police. (imdb)

Such an unlikable film. Not just the bad production values or the fact that it tries so hard for its camera work to be that of Badlands, its the premise, the leading ladies and everything they do. Blowing up some obnoxious guys truck or locking the policeman in the boot and every time they did anything remotely out of their comfort zone, Scott would cue the music and cut to our ladies jazzing off to some tunes being smug brats. While I didn't like the ending either, god I rooted for that cliff.

A movie with this cast shouldn't be so dreadful. The feminist response to this film is interesting to me, considering these women are pretty clueless about the way the world works. They're supposed to seem powerful, but they just come off as jerks.

Ridley Scott was one of the most versatile directors; this one is so different than his other works. It has wonderful scenery and excellent acting particularly by Davis and Sarandon (and up-and-coming Brad Pitt). The inevitability of the story is a nice touch and how they caught in this storm that is not particularly their own making was interesting and touching. Its commentary on the deeply rooted sexual aggression in the society and how by enabling it we create victims is poignant even today.

I like Susan Sarandon, but, like with so many Ridley Scott films, I am seriously unimpressed... and not just because this is such an antiguy film, either. It's about as subtle as a brick, and, really, quite ordinary. It doesn't help that Jason Beghe is totally wasted

I wish I could like it more, it's well acted, well shot, and despite the plot hinging on a series of bad decisions the sense of desperation feels genuine and each decision seems natural in context. Even so, the middle part of the film relies on this too much for my taste and got slightly frustrating.

Another unimpressive Ridley Scott film. Lacks the subtleness it needs to be something good - beating me over the head for 2 hours about your obvious message is very tedious. It's also not entertaining and by the end it's just ridiculous. Yeah, blowing up a guys truck cause he made some rude gestures is justifiable, girl power! The only reason to see this is for Christopher McDonald. That guy is awesome.

This movie succeeds on the strength of the titular friendship. It's a bit bloated and wonkily paced, but the leads - even when they're being dumb as rocks, as Thelma so often is - shine and make this more than an average, forgettable crime caper. I feel somewhat cheated by the famous ending, though - would've been more poignant if it followed through.

Khouri's script has a few great moments, but while the story begins rather well, it becomes impossible to feel anything close to sympathy for the duo from the moment they decide to embrace their outlaw status, which is a move portrayed as heroic and just but in reality undermines the film's theme of female empowerment. Scott's direction isn't anything special but there are good performances all around, with Sarandon and Davis an enjoyable pair to watch throughout.

While the character development is interesting, it's very well written and the acting is great, this film is just packed with the same silly, nonsensial female logic and way of thinking that i hate and can just never wrap my head around. It's so full of anti-male I find it hard to look past the annoying feminism and see what could've really been something if they hadn't focused so much on that. What would or could have been cause circa 1970 for something wayward, moody, contemplative, possibly even introspective, is here just an excuse to bring Hollywood flash and frippery out onto the road and into the heartland. Scott might seem to be a little out of his element, but wherever Ridley goes, along go the pastel filters, the night-time steam, the Venetian-blind shadows, the heat ripples, all the rest. Southern Gothic has never looked so chi-chi.

It's hard to score this one. Hard like my erect nobility towards the finer points of subtlety. I'd love to thrust up the score, but it just tackles the theme with too much grunt for my liking. The classic road trip element was the films finest feature, but it's not enough to soften my score. I'm just going to stay stiff-headed on this one.

Honestly, this maybe Susan Sarandon's best work. And she's done a lot of good work: Step Mom, Shall We Dance, Mr. Woodcock (kind of). I fell in love with the characters, the situation was rich, the story was a real fantasy about two average women who were driven to and then finally chose to live no mater where it took them.

Oh, those dumb cows annoyed me so much! Filmed in a nice anamorphic widescreen (something I really miss in present day blockbusters), with a great cast (so ironic that supporting actors steal the show from lead actresses in a feminist movie), this southern ride by Ridley Scott is a true blockbuster. Story ain't much, but what really bugged me dumb emotionalism of it. Go cliff!

The first half is great. Well paced, well written, well acted, looks very good. From the robbery scene onwards, however, the film flattens into a tacky series of wacky acts of crime that presumably we are supposed to warmly cheer for. Robbing some unknown person's store and threatening to kill the clerk and the patrons -- empowering! Please.

Wonderful performances by the two leads. Toward the end the whole thing got a bit transparent, but lots of laughs throughout (still can't believe that this was really the first script she ever wrote). Amazed that Scott was the one picked to direct this. And yes, Harlan's face as he got blown away was very funny indeed. Oh, and one more thing: leaving all that money with bank robber Pitt in the room was AMAZINGLY FREAKIN STUPID. Wow, looks like we guys really are all a bunch of jerks.

Mixed feelings about this: on the one hand, it feels contrived and manipulative and the fact that every male character (cops, bar customers, truck drivers, even Brad Pitt) is depicted as a misogynistic pig is consistently vexing. However, the film benefits greatly from Scott's skillful, stylish helming which gives it a very atmospheric look, as well as from the two splendid lead performances. In the end, it left a mostly positive impression on me, in part thanks to the effectively staged finale.

I have no problems with a movie picking up a feminist flag and running with it, however that's not what this film is. What starts out being a commentary on the unfortunate situation women find themselves in a patriarchal society with patriarchal laws becomes a righteous gal's day out flick where the most important thing is letting your hair down and being who you really are, be that a criminal or not. Susan Sarandon is the main character of this film but her character is underdeveloped and it's Geena Davis' character who really steals the film. Brad Pitt's cameo is worth the watch.
