According to Susan Sontag this was inspired by Brecht's unfinished novel on Julius Caesar, which a year earlier had formed the basis for Straub and Huillet's HISTORY LESSONS, something we might take as oblique evidence for the idea that paths towards a cinematic politics were laid out by Syberberg and by Straub and Huillet, and then also by Watkins in 1974, from which we might well conclude that the dire state of this medium has something to do with the fact that these paths were never followed.

As usual, Syberberg's exploration of history and historical subjects is superior to most directors, if not all. In its best moments, we are able to visualise in our mind's eye the events narrated to us by Sedlmayr, as well as get a sense of the idea that history is an ambiguous mixture of fact and fiction reconstructed by the teller. But this faux-documentary probably seemed more novel in the early 70s, and lack of familiarity with the source material probably impedes engagement and meaning.
