These Three

This drama works on a impressive high level! Miriam Hopkins & Merle Oberon are stunning, but the true star of the film is Bonita Granville as the child out of control! Her performance was one of the strongest I've felt from a 30s movie! So real and so dangerous! I don't think I've felt such fear from a 13 year old before! Her manipulative frantic ways was truly mesmerizing. She really should have gotten the Oscar she was nominated for! The 12 year old Marcia Mae Jones wasn't bad either!

So much packed into a bit over 90mins, which does feel rushed at times but definitely packs a punch. Bonita Granville as Mary Tilford is terrifying. Perhaps Arthur Miller read Lillian Hellman's book in creating the character of Abigail Williams and/or watched this film? Unlikely, but you never know. A pre-code and more literal adaptation of the book would have made for an even better movie.

An interesting, controversial play transformed into a toothless, plodding movie. The acting and directing are good, but the gutting of the lesbian theme leaves the play hollow and rather puzzling.

The story didn't play out like I was expecting, but I still enjoyed the movie. The film did an excellent job of creating emotion. I felt healthy disdain for the Aunt and the spoiled little girl as the filmmaker intended.

Acho que essa versão envelheceu melhor do que a versão lésbica, embora eu goste bastante de ambas, essa aqui o foco fica exclusivamente na questão da mentira e os meandros desse tipo de desgaste social, quando o Wyler filmou com uma delas lésbica nos anos 60, a problemática se transferiu para uma situação de tragédia que soa datado no contexto queer.
