This is the story of General Custer from the time he enters West Point military academy, through the American Civil War, and finally to his death at Little Big Horn. The battle against Chief Crazy Horse is portrayed as a crooked deal between politicians and a corporation which wants the land Custer gave to the Indians. (imdb)

The film certainly has issues, but there's no denying that it's an excellent mythmaking effort. Even over its long runtime it's almost always engaging and fun to watch.

i find it highly interesting that someone decided to write a script to make george custer a hero and main character in a two hour and ten minute movie. however silly it may sound, flynn was the absolute best person who could possibly play custer. custer may have been a little inaccurately portrayed as a selfless hero and you already know what's going to happen in the end, but it made a heck of a yarn anyway.

Inconsistent and historically inaccurate, "They Died with Their Boots On" is quite a lightweight war movie. The comedy falls flat almost without fail and the action is meagre, the battle scenes being few and not too interesting. Despite being 140 minutes long though, it wasn't too much of a drag because the plot was clear-cut. It's a little too old-fashioned for my taste, and that includes a few cases of racial profiling, but is decent overall.

General Custer my ass! This was pure Errol Flynn!!! All fun and adventure! Oh, and a little romance in between. Got to have that when Olivia de Havilland is around. Not exactly a history lesson, but the film graduates from the class of old Hollywood with high marks!

I don't know squat about General Custer, but I know bullshit when I smell it. There's little doubt that this film is 90% romanticized nonsense. Occasionally fun as brainless Hollywood fare, but that's all it is. Shallow archetypes, broad stereotypes, syrupy score, not a shred of nuance. It's a whole bunch of cliché, saved only by Errol Flynn's natural leading man charm. Just another blah effort from Hollywood's mediocrity factory, Raoul Walsh.

Perfectly sound, if a bit overlong, shifting tonally with the stages of Custer's life and career. A strikingly memorable scene was the procession of Secessionist cadets from West Point - a sobering reminder of decorum and rules of war, played with humanism and grace. I want to see more of that.

It warms my NDN heart that they turned Custer into some sort of campy swashbuckler lol

It is obviously untrue and not based on a real individual but so well-paced that made me willing to sit through the film without biting my upper lip out!
