Park's vampire film bites off more than it can chew. All the thematic elements listlessly waver, one minute the focus is on personal fulfillment, another its on loneliness. It's always interesting, though, and Park's visual flare is on point, so the images are always beautiful.

I wouldn't say it loses focus, but it does definitely drift, and you're not getting away from the 2 hours it takes to get there. As a recovering Catholic, I wish that angle from the outset had remained a more overt constant. But when you're attempting to tackle this many ambitious themes within the narrow confines of a genre as (deservedly) marginalized as the modern vampire love story, I guess I'm willing to cut you some slack.

I have too much to say about this film. First, it's too long. Way too long. Couldn't write the plot on 10 pages of paper. Second, it's very disgusting. Someone vomited in the theatre, when I saw it. I understand that someone. Blood, sex and sickness in excess. I don't like that. Its STYLE, though, was awesome. Camerawork great, the idea about a priest becoming vampire - great! Class acting, great characters. Often very funny. Charming indeed. But I hope I shall never see this film again.

This could have been a great movie. The humor, the concept, the visual style all were great. However the movie was way to slow and long. If they'd lost 30 minutes in the edit room (which could have easely been done because a lot of the scene's conveyed the same information) this movie would have rocked.

A potentially great film that was hindered by some over-indulgence. The premise itself is amazing and I loved the way he both became a vampire and the inner turmoil a priest would have if he became a vampire. In fact, when these were the main themes of the movie it was borderline brilliant cinema. Unfortunately, the focus shifted to a "love" story that I felt wasn't as interesting as the first themes we are introduced too. Still a really good movie despite it's flaws and the ending is masterful.

Very good. Chan-wook Park strikes again after the revenge trilogy in this epic tale of the humble priest turned vampire. This is a very dark film trailing the unfortunate priest in his quest for blood and love, beautiful cinematography and features one of the most sensual lovemaking scenes I've ever witnessed on cinema. If you've seen any of Mr Park's other films, then this a must watch.

Park's take on vampires is intriguing but all over the place. It can't seem to settle on any particular theme (shame, lust, sin, redemption, domestic violence, et cetera) so it kind of flits from one to the next. None of it makes a lasting impression because it's not adequately developed. But there is some pretty good humor, interesting situations, striking imagery and a lot of style. Not as much style as Lady Vengeance, but enough. I did think he went way overboard with the shock value, though.

Overall surprisingly haphazard compared to Park's more focused, complete efforts: the religious element seems to be a springboard to get to the destructive central relationship (the focus?) - but I still could not figure out what Park wished to say here. Still well worth seeing, and better than any American vampire film in ages, but flawed nonetheless.

I don't know if I've just gotten too used to Park Chan-wook, but this film just doesn't have as many of those moments of fresh surprise/delight/shock as his other films, nor does it seem to be as good at using those hinted-at-but-unanswered issues to hold my interest -- I actually think this is a more straightforward work than most of his other films. Still, all the Park Chan-wook elements are there, and it's a good film overall.

A very chilly and different sort of vampire flick that is wonderfully acted but still bewildering at times. It takes almost 90 minutes to gather focus, though I can't imagine what you'd cut from it either. A few scenes are too dark as well, but this is still a beautiful looking film that consistently enthralls. Song Kang-ho is excellent, and Tae-ju's transformation from wallflower to psycho vampire is absorbing.

Vampires and Park Chan-Wook are two things that I'm a little tired of. Well, as you'd expect, Korea's equivalent of Tarantino makes his take on the vampire genre very gory, very stylish and very LONG. There's the typical Korean dark humor going on here (you know, the kind where you're never quite sure when to laugh.) See it if you're in the mood for this kind of thing, I guess.

Park is still in amazing form. I loved almost everything about this film. His visual composition, music, and sound design are all superb yet again. The main characters are existentially tortured and desperate in their own ways. Religious and moral bargaining, faith, vengeance, redemption, humanity, sacrifice, and GUILT GUILT GUILT are all explored with alternating humor, trepidation, repulsion, and indulgence. Funny, beautiful, suspenseful, deep, violent, and fulfilling. See it.

A vampire movie combining Let the Right One In's artsy vanity with Salem's Lot's tedium, Thirst's scares are not scary, its eroticism is not erotic, its humor is not funny and its drama is stupid and dull. Sorry but it's pretty decent considering previous works of Park. There are a lot of original, creative ideas (brilliant moments actually) as separate elements but Park suffers to bring them together. After some point, he loses his focus, but fortunately he handles it at the end very well.

The Korean attempt at a vampire movie is both laughable and jolting. It isn't the typical vampire romance, and that is what I love about it. The acting is a bit over-the-top, but the scenes are captivating with craziness. The gore is awesome, the sex scenes are awesome, and the camera work is awesome. I wish the story had some structure, because it felt all over the place. Many scenes had no purpose, and left me wondering what was Park trying to convey. The last twenty minutes are spectacular.

Any film that throws comedy, romance and horror in to a melting pot is inevitably going to be switching moods like mad and yet Park almost always pulls it off to great effect with hilarity, brutality and really odd, and so mostly really interesting and amusing, drama sitting side by side. It feels a bit all over the place but is great fun - the wonderfully bizarre and hilarious first full on sex scene and the ending in all its sheer black as coal comic genius standing out as the two highlights.

This movie is ALL over the place. Something weird happens, then that scene ends and something else weird happens, then repeat. And it lacks forward momentum: I never could tell if the story was wrapping up or if there was another 45 minutes left. But there are enough entertaining ideas and scenes to make it pretty enjoyable. It's also quite gross. Overall an interesting, albeit overstuffed, take on the vampire concept.

I'm not really sure what to make of it. On one hand it's disturbing on so many new and unimaginable levels, on the other hand it illustrates that there are few tools left with which to deconstruct the vampire archetype. Still it ends up being quite the compelling trip. I wish some movie theater tricked people into coming to see Twilight and showed this film instead.

This one was always going to be a bit of an oddball curiosity; shame that it's a bit scattershot in its focus. However, this is still a very enjoyable take on the vampire genre. The film looks great, and the performances are effective - Ok-bin Kim is particularly watchable as her character transforms from doormat to demon. The various elements and themes are (sort of) woven together with a thread of dark comedy, and the film is worth seeing even though it doesn't quite fulfil its potential.

Lots of unique ideas and a very different take on ye olde vampire tale. Consistently (and unexpectedly--"ooh, so strong!") funny, too. From what I've watched so far, this is the 'least' of Park's works, which speaks volumes of his ability. Rewatch on 9/26-16. The flawed (at times non-)relationship between MCs is super powerful to me. I feel pretty much exactly the same about it as I did 6 years ago, but I enjoyed it even more this time. A long movie that tends to meander in spots, as well as some sub-par special effects in a couple scenes, this is nevertheless another strong showing from Park-Chan Wook showing his take on vampirism. Especially refreshing take after the inundation of "cool" vampire movies, this shows them as the chilling monsters they can be with some exceptionally uncomfortable scenes. This is definitely not his best work but it's a strong one.

A brilliant film and a mess rolled into one. It's a mix of romance, comedy and horror that don't seem to sit well together. I can't really figure out why though because the romance story is great, it's incredibly funny at times, and there's plenty of gore. Numerous excellent shots and sequences, but film eventually drags until the viewer loses interest in the narrative, characters and ideas. This is a very different movie from 2008's LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, but for all the flaws of both films, they are probably the two best vampire movies since the excellent and under-appreciated VAMPIRE'S KISS.

There's a lot to love here, from Park's ever lovely/disturbing style to the darkly humorous performances of the always reliable Song Kang-ho as well as Kim Ok-bin. At times I think the level of violence did more harm than good to the emotional impact of certain scenes (especially the ending, though still good), but I'm certainly not condemning its implementation. My biggest complaint would be that it's not exactly subtle with its varied themes, but it never stops being thoroughly watchable.

It's a shame that the effects are excellent, the imagery is nice, and that the great little character moments are wasted in a film that's just kind of there. With dazzling style, great humor and lacking in any subtlety, Park offers up an entertaining and unapologetically messy black rom-com. Although "Bakjwi" far outstays its welcome and overplays the vampire genre's bloody clichés, there are plenty of terrific touches from the camerawork to the jokes to the brief glimpses of emotional resonance (the shoe exchange, the finale). In the end, it's definitely style-over-substance but it's a style I can enjoy and admire.

I think I soured somewhat on Park between my first and second viewings of Lady Vengeance. This is badly paced, with significantly less material than its ridiculous and unnecessary length would suggest. The first half is quite good, but the second half goes off the rails into some pretty dumb territory (they're being haunted by a ghost, oh wait never mind) and Kim's performance turns cartoonish. A cool, fun 80-minute genre piece stretched out to breaking point.

Park takes his crack at a revisionist vampire film. He introduces several interesting themes, including a tie to religion as the lead priest-turned-vampire picks up a few disciples who find his second-life inspiring in a somewhat familiar way, but quickly discards them in favor of a succession of awkwardly kinetic set pieces and pushy violence. Also, in a departure from his usual technical style, Park goes wild with the camera, embracing dizzying first-person shots and bizarre pans.
