Another stellar cast and another comedic letdown. This wants to be a dramedy but comes across as a drama with some comedy awkwardly shoved in BECAUSE LIFE ITSELF IS FUNNY. There's a "Goof" that IMDB missed for some reason: These characters are all adults and yet they're all still growing up! That's a goof, right?

Now, I'm not really sure where this stands for some people, but I liked it. Shawn Levy should stick to movies like these. I'm sure some will argue that there are better dramas, but I feel like this is a film that many can relate to. Actors were all really good and Bateman still stands as one of my favorites. Emotional, yes, but very realistic in some respects. Comedic relief wasn't always necessary, but I didn't hate it. Easily worth a watch.

This is Where I Leave You is a whiny movie about people and their relationship troubles with solutions so easy that it's impossible to become invested in the material. It's not funny enough to keep you engaged after you realize that you're not going to gain anything from its plot or characters, and it drags from there. This is not a long movie but it certainly feels like one. A cast this talented and funny deserved a better screenplay. I can't recommend This is Where I Leave You.

Superior cast. A story about a large family & the kinds of drama that comes along with that. A strangely rewarding movie with some emotional payoff & a bit of wisdom. Jason Bateman was satisfying. Rose Byrne, Tina Fey and Adam Driver stood out. A few good comedic moments, but it's mostly a family relationship drama. Despite being about people making bad choices, it's worth watching, and mostly entertaining & enjoyable. Many missed opportunities to be a better movie.

Some movies make dysfunctional families seem relatable, even lovable. This is not one of those movies.

The script is a 4/10, the performances are a 7/10, it's watchable or not watchable depending on how much you like the cast. It's not good enough or bad enough to be defined by its quality, but I wouldn't recommend seeking it out until it's on cable channels.

Ok, a reasonably good dramedy, and I'll leave it as a 70 in spite of Jane Fonda, her running joke breasts, and her PC bomb near the end.

Maybe even worse than that, though, is how the movie romanticizes--and thus minimizes--its characters' poor-to-downright-awful choices. Judd and Wendy reinforce each other's infidelity rationalizations. Wendy suggests that Judd's going to have to cheat on his wife in order to get over her cheating on him. And then we're asked to completely understand why Wendy would cheat on her husband--because the one true love of her life is still "out there." (pluggedin.com)

The story feels whiny, simple and very much like normal everyday problems - but not relatable at all. The cast is strong in this, especially Adam Driver. It's not as funny as it could be either, though when it does hit, it's pretty good. Also they say it's an hour and forty minutes long, but it felt a whole lot longer - which is not good.

I'm a sucker for movies that prominently feature bickering. And when the cast enacting said bickering is as marvellously talented and effortlessly funny as this lot, well, you're speaking my language. It doesn't quite capitalise on the potential of the shivah setup as effectively as it might have, and the family reunion setup is a little hoary at this juncture, but this still proved an extremely enjoyable, sharply funny watch for me.

An okay movie in almost all ways. The only place it shines is in the casting because most of them are charming (I love Tina Fey). We've seen this before; family gets together, mulls over their problems, bickers, figures things out, we're expected to cry. It does it pretty well, but with a lesser cast it may not have worked because some of the script is wonky. It's also not actually that funny. I chuckled a couple times.

This film is sometimes soppy, occasionally silly and often funny. As an ensemble comedy, it is perfectly cast, and a touch relatable, though not without its flaws. If you're a fan of both the TV series Arrested Development and Parenthood, and looking for childish hilarity tempered with emotional moments, then This is Where I Leave You.

A largely forgettable family drama where, in the end, a once broken family comes together after the death of their patriarch. I wish I could muster up the energy to give this film a stinging indictment, but I can only shrug my shoulders.

I love this sweet, funny, intelligent movie with one huge reservation: the direction. I kept getting the feeling the director did not understand what was funny or ironic about the (excellent) writing. Fantastic script, and a superlative ensemble cast (esp. Driver). One might argue that Jason Bateman is the only weak link, but I think he just needed firmer directorial guidance--from a director that actually gets the material (see Levy's other movies - I rest my case). GREAT closing credits song.

Considering the talent involved here, it's quite baffling how dull and ordinary it is. It does have moments when it threatens to come to life, but it never quite manages it.
