A slow film which fails to display much magic or charm. The love triangle takes far too long to emerge. The different sections of the film fail to mesh, and some scenes have no relevance. None of the actors impress much aside from Emmanuelle Riva. The focus on the realities of war detracts from the characters and their melodrama. All in all, a film as mangled and chaotic as the war it attempts to portray - not a patch on Franju's earlier "Thérèse Desqueyroux".
