Three Hollywood hunks and a classy dame in a story about the struggles in Germany after the Great War with incredible romance. And who better to deliver that then the king of romance, director Frank Borzage! A bit too much at times, but with well written corny love dialogue, which I guess might be author F. Scott Fitzgerald's work, helps this tremendously. The acting is also top notch! Margaret Sullavan especially! She set the mood. An love/friendship story which captures something special.

An effective bittersweet mix of joy and suffering from Borzage. Even if at times it feels a little forced and the second half drags a bit, it's a wonderful experience. Sullavan is wonderful and lovely, but the interplay between the three male leads is the heart of the film. There's a unity and distance in the relationship that speaks to the powerful isolation one can feel in a troubled world while also giving a hand to the pleasure of human bonds and the light and purpose it gives to life.

Screenplay (co-written by F. Scott Fitzgerald) isn't much more than your standard soaper, but director Frank Borzage adds some nice touches (liked the way the phone calls were shot), and Margaret Sullavan is flat-out great in the genre role of the dying woman.
