Nellie Rimplegar has to tell her grown children that due to her bungled handling of their finances, the family has been wiped out by the Stock Market crash. Friend and family doctor, Alan Stevens, tells them they'll all need to eliminate their extravagant ways and get jobs. Stevens also rents a room in their house more as a way to be near pretty Elizabeth Rimplegar, than to help their finances. (imdb)

While this is marketed as a screwball comedy it's more of a drama with a zany family.Mary Boland as the Matriarch of this family easily is the best character and the most entertaining to watch.I really liked how the film portrays the family as at first weathering the Great Depression then succumbing to it.The struggles they faced while not fully fleshed out give a sense of the hardship they faced. The romance with Claudette Corbett and her suitor's were the weakest parts of this film.

A slowed up screwball comedy which doesn't find it's rhythm in the slow pace. It's got it's players managing to get something out of their characters, but director Elliott Nugent doesn't get the best out of them. Mary Boland as the mother of the family was delightful. So dignified and stupid. Claudette Colbert however didn't have any chemistry with her two love interests. Neither the artist Hardie Albright nor the doctor Richard Arlen. This is a decent movie, but it never hits any highs.
