In the hands of a lesser director this would be 'poverty porn' or 'noble farmer' nonsense, but it's Wang Bing and so what we get is a carefully crafted story about the intimate links between familial love (immediate and extended family, as well as domestic animals and livestock) and labour. It's ironic that an analog story is most authentically captured in digital form.
