Tillie's Punctured Romance

Another reviewer said this is "for...the Marie Dressler devotee, if there is such a thing." In fact there is, and that would be me. She had a face made for silent comedy--it must have been made partially of rubber. The kinds of over-the-top expressions she could make, coupled with those huge eyes--just fabulous. Quite the film debut! Chaplin's physicality is on full display here, too--he moves like a gymnast. The humor and the pacing are a bit uneven, but it's an important piece of film history.

If you're a Chaplin fan, or a fan of silent era slapstic in general you'll enjoy this, but as a movie on its own merits it just doesn't age that well.

"Tillie's Punctured Romance" is blessed with an inspired storyline and a couple of great sequences towards the end, but, at seventy minutes, it is too long.

Charlie Chaplin is at good as physical comedy as ever, but is oddly miscast as a cad. Marie Dressler is also excellent at pratfalls, but her character has waaaay too much uncomfortable and unfunny humor leveled at her.

The Keystone formula stretched to the breaking point, but at least someone fell in the water at the end like all of 'em.

sat through it, waiting for something to happen, blaming myself for not enjoying it as if I were missing something, namely a sense of humor. This is slapstick to the ultimate degree and nothing else. When all hell breaks loose and Dresler starts firing shots with a gun I perked up -- here, finally, must be a humorous, hilarious chaotic climax. impressed with the speed of the zanyness,only joke seems to be that floors everywhere are very slippery and everybody lands on their butts. ROFL!!! No.

This is only for the dedicated Chaplin devotee. Or the Marie Dressler devotee, if there is such a thing. But outside of its novel place as the first feature length comedy, the film just isn't funny--unless you get a kick out of people bouncing off of Dressler right and left.

Great early Chaplin with lots of great slapstick held together by an entertaining (and outrageous) plot.

Dreadfully boring and equally unfunny.
