Ever since I watched Time of the Gypsies I've been trying to put into words inside my head what it is that's so special about it, but the more I try the less I succeed. It's such a perfect mix of absurdity, comedy, tragedy, symbolism and every emotion known to man, that I can honestly say that I've never seen anything else like it.

One of the best movies I have seen ever. Heartwarming and heartbreaking, fascinating, musical and magical, at times gut-bustingly funny. Supported by a remarkable cast of personalities, at the center of which is Perhan. He's the most compelling character I've seen in a long time, and watching him develop throughout the film is a cinematic experience as fulfilling as any other.

Kusturica created such a wonderful world packed with flamboyant characters. It's these wonderful characters that provide such a strong emotional connection with the film, it's incredibly touching and memorable.

A masterpiece. Half way through this movie I start crying, even though I've seen it several times. Bregovic's score is exemplary.

The darkest Kusturica. Sad and utterly beautiful. And with the greatest music Bregovic's ever written.

PeaceAnarchy | 92 97th |
An intense human drama wrapped in a strange mix of absurd comedy and surrealism. The whole thing is much more emotionally charged than it seems at first glance and while I was laughing at times I was incredibly moved at others. It really is a wonderful unique film.

A powerhouse of a film, exploring a world you've never seen before. It should dig its way to every person's emotional core, drawing sympathy towards the main character aswell. Perhan has to learn everything the hard way, being plagued at the same time by the aftermath of leaving the people he loves behind. Truly one of the best characters ever put on film. A hymn to life, "Time of the Gypsies" is one fucking compelling film !!! Mesmerizing music aswell (lol, Borat)...

A beautiful metaphor of life and a moral tale of epic proportions. Kusturica is one of the greatest.

Kusturica manages to build an unique universe and creates with his almost unnoticable, "magic" touches, an almost immediate sympathy with the characters. The mid part drags a bit at times, but all in all this is a deeply compelling journey. Packs an emotional punch that hits you hard at the end.

My 2nd Kusturica experience and it sure was a bizarre one. The ending and the climax were incredible and not until then did I realize how genius this movie was. I also enjoyed the tavern scene quite a lot. I probably need to watch this again to make sense of it all but I just wish all movies had this level of originality.

The humor somewhat escapes me, but it's such a fun movie, so unique, flamboyant, and creative, that it hardly matters. It's a lovely coming of age story, with a great cast of characters, a slight touch of weirdness and a bit of romance and tragedy that make it one of the most diverse movies I've ever seen. It's so fleeting that it seems to fly by, but it's not any less profound for it. That's an incredibly hard thing to accomplish - my hat is off to Kusturica.

Both comically absurd and tragic, filled with memorable characters. A beautifully rendered work of surrealism that's difficult not to enjoy.

Everytime Ederlezi kicks in and surreal takes over something profound happens that Kusturica will be remembered with.

Well-paced and wildly original. I wouldn't mind checking out the 4½ hour cut. On a personal note, my girlfriend loved this movie so much that we're now, apparently, getting a pet turkey.

In the Balkan Goodfellas we find a compelling main character and a director who stands out for his imagination and visual creativity. This should be a recipe for a cracking film but the story is quite disjointed and goes in numerous directions tonally. Perhaps I'm missing something...

It's daringly original but I didn't fall head over heels in love with it. A number of reviewers have rightly called this "flamboyant" and I got to say I don't consider that to be as complimentary as they do. I would actually go so far as to say it's borderline goofy with its magical realism. I don't mean to sound overly harsh here, as it does have a number of memorable and touching scenes, and the ending is wonderful. Just not my cup of tea.

deaddilly | 90 94th |
The sense of wonder captured in the first leg of the film is something else. As Perhan corrupts, so does the film - diving into a seedy underworld that slowly dissolves the magic of the film into a ruthless tale of greed/revenge. In the ranks of the true epics.

Rufam | 75 72nd |
A coming-of-age film told in idiosyncratic Kusturica style -absurd, rampant and boldly emotional (still, sarcasm always waits around the corner). I found the story rather flat and at times unengaging and some of the spiritual stuff flew over my head but there are nevertheless lots of golden sequences, when the surrealism, the tenderness and the visual panache blend together in wildly original and satisfying ways. The film didn't captivate me completely, but its best moments are to be treasured.

A bold and unique film. It's packed with memorable characters - especially Perhan, who is an extremely interesting protagonist. This is one of those films that seems to capture almost every aspect of life in a compelling and emotionally resonant way - and the more I think about it, the more I like it.
