Racecar driver Clark Gable is at the wheel, but journalist Barbara Stanwyck is in control as she exposes his fierce, speed-demon tactics in the revved-up star vehicle 'To Please a Lady'. Racing sequences ranging from dirt-track events to the Indianapolis 500 set the pace for this high-octane romance featuring Gable at his manliest and Stanwyck at her savviest. (Warner)

Terrible title, and the movie is little better. Stanwyck was relegated to second billing for this one, after Clark Gable--one must assume due to supposed star-power (though this picture took a big bite out of that!) and not acting ability...his shtick just seems tired here. As is so often the case, Stanwyck is the only reason to sees this (unless you just LOVE car racing): she suggests a bit of complexity in a role that, in any lesser hands, would be one-dimensional, or shrill, or just boring.

The macho role that pushed Hollywood's most macho man, Clark Gable, out of the Top-10 box office attractions. As long as you can stand the old school hardheaded man, mixed with a good dose of classic sexism, To Please a Lady (1950) is a okay film. Focuses a lot of race cars, and even stunt driving, so it's got a few spectacular moments in between Gable and Barbara Stanwyck cozy and not so cozy bit.
