A solid movie that is damaged by a terrible and nonsensical ending. Christopher Lee puts on a good performance, though it's a disappointment that he didn't get another opportunity to play the hero, as he did in Hammer's previous Wheatley adaptation (The Devil Rides Out).

Christopher Lee was acting Christopher Lee the way only Christopher Lee can. The set in the end, the castle, was marvelous and suited the story nicely. Only the story did not suit for anything. It was horrible. They were building tense towards the end and the ending was like hit by truck. Awful. The effects were lame and the baby stupid rubber thing.

Hammer's last film until their recent resurrection. Not bad, just not especially groovy, either

This is a turd of a film; disappointing given the great job Hammer did with Wheatley's The Devil Rides Out. Seemingly Wheatley hated it to the extent that he wouldn't let Hammer adapt any more of his work, and Lee hated the ending - have to agree with them. The narrative is unclear and disjointed, clearly a product of many rewrites, and the ending is so ill-conceived that it is difficult to understand what the hell was going on, and how it related to the rest of it. Some of the acting is okay...

Solid cast with Christopher Lee, Richard Widmark, Denholm Elliott and a young Nastassja Kinski in only her second role. But dragged down by a disappointing rushed ending after a fine built up rest of the movie.

What I liked about this movie most was the lore behind the cult and their very brutal way of achieving what they wanted. Otherwise, I found it way too slow to be suspenseful and while there were scenes in between that worked better than the others, overall I just didn't get that much out of it. Might have just needed a better frame of mind for watching it, but right now I will put it down as one of those kind of obscure, mediocre 70's horror films.

Of the thousands of films I've seen, rarely has one been as unfollowable as this one. I had to frequently pause it to read the Wiki synopsis to find out WTF just happened. Now, most horror films have implausible plots, so I won't fault this one for its implausibility. Just for the fact that it doesn't explain itself well. I do give credit, however, to the plates and jewelry and statues with images of people being impaled by crucifixes in their groins. Nice touch.
