Didn't really vibe with this because it relies heavily on you caring about the core romance but the movie is way too plodding on its pacing and is too boring in style to get invested in either the general premise or its bizarre plot devices. The movie doesn't give me a strong case for why the lead would be invested so much in this time traveler and the sappy writing got increasingly groanworthy the more it went on, REALLY trying my patience with the hodgepog final time jump sequence.

I love this story and even though this isn't my favorite adaptation I still thoroughly enjoyed it.

Bizarre and beautiful as expected, Nobuhiko Ōbayashi's film blends the consequences of time travel into the complications of a girl's coming of age process. It's a voyage into a wonderland where everything becomes temptingly out of reach and disturbingly familiar. Sadly the only thing that attached me to the film is the aforementioned style of the director, otherwise, it would be a dreadful experience because of how casually the time travel theme is dealt with.

In terms of weirdness and ingenuity, this is nowhere near as out there as Hausu. The first half of the movie is very slow, focusing more on the coming-of-age aspects rather than the sci-fi angle. It's not until about an hour into it when things start getting bizarre, and even then they're relatively tame. Some of the time travel sequences are dynamite, however. If the movie wasn't quite what I was hoping for, at least it was pleasant with likable characters, especially Harada in the lead.
