I'm not usually a fan of the local "artsy" projects, but this one has the advantage of setting an interesting mood of tension and danger that leaves you wondering what will happen next. It leaves a lot unexplained and it has flaws, but you get the unease while you watch it.

Something of an oddity for Dolan. He's quietly charismatic with wild hair in a strange psychological thriller. Not entirely successful but enjoyable and a little creepy, buoyed by a great Gabriel yawed score,

Tone felt wild and inconsistent. A shame because the premise of internalized homophobia and the sexual space the characters are trying to navigate was interesting on it's face.

While the bombastic soundtrack and generalized navel-gazing of this film reek of a certain type of self-indulgence, I don't think for one second that this is unintentional or to the film's detriment. There is a lot of psychosexual and homoerotic unpacking required of the viewer here, but Dolan and crew are clearly aware of how to translate such a chamber-piece on screen. Such projects are valuable, for ones like this film broadly sketch a haunting portrait of the narcissism inherent to grief.

Wildly interesting premise (Stockholm's syndrome! internalized homophobia!). And I wouldn't mind the outrageous tonal inconsistencies, opaque characters or the plot's occasional absurdity (the whole Sarah incident), if I didn't get the impression that a scene like that of Tom and his dead boyfriend's redneck brother (who is predictably hot as fuck) dancing tango in a barn is Dolan's wet dream of a perverse Instagram. Intriguing as it is, the film's too fucking cool for its own good.

Filmen är tidvis riktigt obehaglig (i alla fall inledningsvis), men lider av att karaktärerna gör obegripliga val och handlingar. Dolan fokuserar på det estetiska, medan filmens manus är ganska svagt: vaga antydningar får kompensera för att filmen saknar ett ärende.

Dolan has to be the most visually exciting director that's started post 2010. While not really my thing except for the visuals them alone can carry this thing.

It's nice to see Dolan work outside of his wheelhouse, crafting a tense thriller. Great score as well. Not his best, but it's a solid picture.
