A real salt-of-the-earth film. Not only does it match the stark tone of Faulkner's language, it seems to originate from the country, without pretension, setting one foot in front of the other. All of this is not especially entertaining or surprising, but it is straight, honest, and highly unusual.

A nice little film with a rather rigid and straight-forward message. The framing narrative is hokey and not the most intelligent set-up for this story, and even though Duvall's performance/accent rings a tad unbelievable and theatrical, the meat of the story is very endearing, seeing it unfold and slowly rope in other characters, all of whom avoid being cheapened by their place in this story.

One of Robert Duvall's best performances in a career of great performances. The slow pace and relatively little narrative development might put some people off, but at the center is a very understated and beautiful story. It's fairly obvious that the film was based on a stage play, and in fact the source material for that play was a Faulkner story. Overall a great and under appreciated film.

Gonna admit I only taped this cuz Norm mentioned this on his podcast but ended up becoming really engrossed in the story. A so-so performance by Bellin and a captivating performance by Duvall!

This stark, agonizing black-and-white film is a remarkably artistic statement about the human condition. You must be willing to hypnotized by the slow pace to absorb the power of this film. The DVD conversation between Duvall and Horton Foote (the screenwriter) is a bonus.
