Bobby Darin's...attempt at acting aside, it's pleasant enough. Certainly hope the rest of Cassavetes is more like Shadows and less like this.

Why couldn't Cassavetes make a movie about a black jazz musician for once?

For his second feature Cassavetes made a movie for Paramount studios. It therefor misses the more raw and improvised energy of Shadow or Faces. Still the movie feels spontaneous and free. Both Bobby Darin and Stella Stevens do an excellent job. Portraying their characters with the necessary pride and hurt to make them work . Thematically it's interesting that for his first studio project made a movie that's about the choice between his artistic freedom or "selling out".

Cassavetes being forced to color inside the lines

A studio project, but it's got that Cassavetes spirit, written and acted with messy, realistic, compassionate temperament. The drama isn't quite gut-wrenching, but there are some really great moments (the baseball game, the bar fight).

Cassavetes renegou este filme por ter sido uma manobra de estúdio e não de sua real visão, emulando a própria narrativa do filme como é claro à todos. Mesmo sem o feeling Cassavetes, ainda é um puta filme com a estética de estúdio, sobretudo pela presença magnífica da Stella Stevens que me lembrou o tempo todo da Marilyn Monroe de Bus Stop, mas sem o alívio cômico.
