In this short subject (which mostly represents a departure from Disney's traditional approach to animation), a stuffy owl teacher lectures his feathered flock on the origins of Western musical instruments. Starting with cavepeople, whose crude implements could only "toot, whistle, plunk and boom," the owl explains how these beginnings led to the development of the four basic types of Western musical instruments: brass, woodwinds, strings, and percussion. Fairly abstract, but also pretty cool.

For a short on music, the music is a bit incoherent. The visuals are absolutely sublime however.

It's pretty cute, especially the quick musical history lesson and the nice visuals.

This seems almost like a WB cartoon than a Disney product. Either way, enjoyable.

More of the singing birds, I liked the animation style and some of the educational bits but mostly I just felt bored. The cavemen were the highlight here.

Entertaining, however very abstract in style. Reminds me pretty much of Disney's Hercules... But: Just kill these damn birds! ;-)

Really nice style if not for the stupid birds.

Felt a little bit too educational to be entertaining, but still something that is worth seeing (especially if you are a music teacher or something). However, once the racist caricatures come in - it's a bit iffy to watch. It's not overt, but it is something that really bars this from being an educational classic.

Everything I ever learned, that musical owl taught me. I grew up on those Disney VHSs that were just cribbed musical bits from their feature films.
