I really enjoyed Chris Rock's directorial debut. Not only was the story consistently funny and engaging Rock also managed to shine a light on what it is to be a celebrity in the modern day. Things I enjoyed and have to mention: Certain cameos, an interesting take on the themes of a certain fairytail, and the presence of quite a few SNL cast members.

Do surprising cameos make a movie good? Does not being a Tyler Perry movie account 4 all the positive reviews? Except for a scene where Rock returns to his family in the projects - which is not only slightly funnier than the rest of the film (which isn't at all), but feels far more honest and out-of-place than the Kevin Smith-style screenwriting that surrounds it (which is hit & miss even for Smith) - there is nothing here anywhere near as illuminating or insightful OR FUNNY as his stand-up.

Chris Rock tried to return to his roots in a movie that he wrote and directed, and there are parts where his aims towards something sophisticated are easy to identify. Unfortunately, when his intentions try to compromise with that hard-to-stomach humor, it totally throws the vibe off the rails.

Rock's film hits on all the spots it is supposed to (funny + interesting), and is the best Rock film to date (which is a backhanded insult, in a way), but the characters feel oddly shallow. This issue is related to the script, because the acting is great. Rosario Dawson has one of the most under-appreciated performances of the year.

not into Chris Rock. Would've been more enjoyable if pretty much any of the supporting cast took the lead. Preferably Leslie Jones.

A diverting but televisual, inconsequential and not very funny romantic drama. The universal acclaim is baffling, though I imagine race-obsessed critics might see value in its discussion of blackness (I'm not the only one to notice that films are increasingly being judged on the extent to which they further the cause of women and minorities, maybe because that mode of critique is so easy - "there weren't enough women/blacks, and the ones that existed weren't positive enough representations").

This was obviously a very personal project for Rock, which is one of its main strengths. It also feels somewhat amateurish perhaps because of this, with some of the dialogue seeming quite forced and not natural. It does contain some okay critiques of today's media, but not necessarily anything new. Rock is very likable and pairing himself with Dawson was an inspired decision. The film has a couple of funny scenes, and some fun cameos, but on the whole, it comes off as somewhat mediocre.

There are aspects of Top Five's style that are likeable, but it's neither funny enough to be a comedy nor insightful enough to be anything more.

Pretty much the film I've always wanted Chris Rock to make. A very self-aware, relevant and ultimately pretty hilarious movie, that features a revolving cast of comedians and a strong lead performance from Rock.

Andre Allen (Chris Rock), once a great comedian, now stuck in awful films and on the verge of a publicity-driven wedding, is forced to consider his past and his choices by a savvy reporter (Rosario Dawson). Rock delivers sequences that are as hilarious as his best stand-up (especially the Houston episode), but combines that with a heartfelt look at the perils of celebrity. Ultimately he tries to fit too much in and the film never fully blossoms, but it has great moments and a superb cast.

Stuffed with one of the best ensembles of the year, this film is surprising and funny in all the right ways, if a little heavy-handed and stilted in its structure.

This and "Dear White People" appear to be an effort to improve black ensemble comedy away from the Tyler Perry genre which these both slammed. They try to include enough inside black humor (ex. the top five lists ???) while having enough of it familiar to whites to draw some of them in. So far, the quality seems to be good, but the box not so much.

I'd like to like this movie more, if that makes sense. When a film has something interesting to say, I like to give it credit for saying it. But what this movie says does not mitigate what it shows. And that makes me sad. Honestly. (pluggedin.com)

If the Oscars gave awards for the "Best Surprise Cameo" this might get it. Don't look it up if you haven't seen it yet. Duh.

I loved Top Five for its great mix of Woody Allen NYC charm and energetic black culture, a hilarious ensemble cast, and its generally understated nature. Its portrayal of alcoholism verges on being a cliched crutch, but overall overcomes that fault.

Probably will end up in my top five worst films of the year. I wanted to like it because I love Rock's comedy and think he's whip smart but this movie fell flat for me.

A very nice first directorial outing for Rock. He has a great charisma and his character is incredibly relatable. That is a credit to both the performer and the writing (which is dialogue driven and very funny).

The best-cast comedy in quite a few years. Man, everyone in this impeccable ensemble sparkles. The movie whole lives up to the promise the actors bring, too: this is a beautifully poignant, often hilarious slice-of-celebrity-life. The dialogue is superb, drawing on shared pop-cultural touchstones and making a strong case for the profound effects movies and music have on us - both direct and indirect, for the better and for the worse.Still not out in UK cinemas, so I got the US Blu - glad I d

Top Five is surprisingly enjoyable. The film is quick paced, full of energy and often funny. The sex scene with Cedric the Entertainer, near the beginning, made me question what I had gotten into, but from there on out it was consistently worthwhile. As Rock's character gets his mojo back, you can't help but root for him, and the film ends leaving a smile on your face. Dawson and Rock work well together, though it sometimes seems like Top Five is a RomCom in disguise.

An excellent and perhaps very revealing comedy that uses its premise to have Chris Rock rant on a bunch of topics, some personal and self-deprecating, and some worthy shots fired at embarrassingly inferior comedy films (funnily enough, Adam Sandler makes a cameo appearance, the funniest he's been since the similar Funny People). Although the romance isn't hugely unpredictable or unformulaic, Dawson holds her own in this with her variety of gross-out scenes to equal Rock's.

Rosario Dawson was good. Chris Rock's performance was uneven. The love story was underdeveloped and felt forced. A few scenes were amusing. The romance wasn't convincing enough and the comedy wasn't funny enough. I liked the standup part. Poor music. The cameos were lame. The real fault was the story, dialog and directing from Chris Rock. The story wasn't engaging enough and the ending is a confused mess. I would think he'd want to showcase his own talents better than this.

I thought it was going to just be a 'for the masses' garbage comedy, but it's actually a really good character piece. Even so, I could really feel like this movie wasn't targeted at me and so I didn't really love it (I don't know a song from anyone in those top five lists, even Kanye)

Perhaps a little surprisingly, very smart and consistent. He manages to create a film with a good message and not even a hint of vulgarity. Cameos are terrific, Chris Rock himself is great in the lead role and has good chemistry with Rosario Dawson. Only downside would be that the script becomes a little predictable and lazy, but it is an enjoyable film.
