I am honestly mystified by all the reviews on here calling this homoerotic. Nobody talks about how amazingly badass it is! I watched it in skin tight jeans and a cutoff tank top while drinking a fuzzy navel and I didn't think it was gay.

"They are this gay fighting fucking force, all right? And they're beating the Russians, the gays are beating the Russians. And what is the last fucking line that they have together? They're all hugging and kissing and happy with each other, and Ice comes up to Maverick, and he says, 'Man, you can ride my tail, anytime!' And what does Maverick say? 'You can ride mine!' Swordfight! Swordfight! Fuckin' A, man!"

Tarantino has a hypothesis this is a thinly-veiled homoerotic parable; watching it again elevates his reasoning to theory. Probably responsible for the no-plot action film, the greasy/sexy people montage, and the deluge of glossy MTV-esque cinematography still perpetuated by the worst of the Hollywood elite. Mind-numbingly watchable, but soul-sucking of the highest Satanic order.

I would like to rewatch this with a Slavoj Žižek commentary just for the laughs. Hilariously hypersexualized on every conscious and subconscious level. It quickly becomes very numbing though. Only worth playing for drunken psychosocial analyzing with the boys. Wait, was that a Freudian pun or a Freudian slip?

They could've switched Michael Ironside and Kelly McGillis around and it still would be just as gay. They played Take my Breath away like five times in this and it wasn't enough - soundtrack is a hoot. People walking out of this all inspired to join the military while I'd be rushing over to a Kenny Loggins concert. I miss Tony Scott.

Not as gay as, say, Batman & Robin, but it's nearly there. A beach volleyball scene feels more like softcore gay porn, but my favourite part is when the fleet commander (or whatever) declares he wants butts. While it's one of the movies that Cruise has become most famous for, the huge stars here are Val Kilmer's teeth. The movie is completely ridiculous, but there's a certain stupid charm to it that makes it almost watchable. It has a sizeable cult following for some reason, but it's bad.

Certainly has had a big influence on the American blockbuster but it's now mostly just a relic of its time, reflecting a lot of bad things about this particular era in America. The emotions are rote and shallow, and Cruise's smirk is annoying. To its credit most of the cinematography is excellent and it is watchable, but not any more fulfilling than the blockbusters that spawned from its tropes. At least the unintentionally homosexual machismo leads to some laughs.

Way too much 80s. Like, if you put the 1980s in a blender, and then distilled it down to a concentrated form and drizzled it over a cliched plot, you'd get this movie. Lots of love ballads, Rooskie-fighting, and suppressed homosexuality. However, it's actually quite enjoyable, and it gets bonus points from me for the dogfights.

The King of Hollywood Homoeroticism...at least until 300 came along. Kind of ironic that despite this being just about the gayest movie ever (that's not actually about a gay person), the only one of the principal actors to come out of the closet after filming this was Kelly McGillis.

Disgusting army propaganda, entertaining then because you were a kid. Entertaining now because of it's seriously homo-erotic undertones. Still, when Goose gets it, it's okay for grown men to cry.

First off, Cruise is far too short a man for a believable volleyball montage. Secondly, the ice-Cold War melting before our eyes, maybe shouldn't be used as a device to help Maverick get over his confidence issues. And, finally, yes, 80's Macho has turned into 20xx gay. I put this down to the conflict between Ice and Mav being established with a competitive dislike but still on the same team angle..and the constant referrals to hard-ons.

My first video, we even memorized the lyrics to the stupic song Cruise sings to McGillis at the toilet; "you never close your eyes, when I kiss". I built a 1/24 model of F-14 Tomcat that I still own to this very day. I'm surprised to notice Cruise was indeed the reckless ass Kilmer tried to warn, not the other way around. As phony as it is, is it really worse than any blockbuster of the millenium?

A silly but very entertaining movie. The whole thing has become a cliche but for the most part it still works as entertainment despite (or perhaps because of) groan worthy dialogue. The aerial shots are by far the best part of the movie and it's worth watching for those alone.

After watching this I want to be Maverick's backseat copilot person. We could go out together, get drunk and maybe wrestle sometimes. We could oil each other up for shirtless games of volleyball and slap each other and hug. If we got shot down we could huddle together for body heat on a deserted island. Navy pilots, Fuck Yeah!

Probably the most "Reagan-era" movie in existence, with its sleek military fetishism, vaguely homoerotic macho vibe, aviator sunglasses, and propulsive 80s soundtrack. It hasn't really aged especially well and most of the dogfighting stuff isn't terribly compellingly filmed. It's more the character interplay and 80s vibe and soundtrack that entertain. This is the rare film that kind of feels like it's all first act, which is interesting but makes the end feel sudden.

Scott set out to make a rock and roll movie in the sky, and he completely succeeded: Top Gun is an empty sensorial experience, a technically dazzling melange of sight and sound whose MTV inspired aesthetic had an unfortunate long lasting influence on American film. The human 'drama' is pure cliche and struggles to maintain interest. The real attraction is the spectacular aerial footage, which the 'story' was very obviously molded around, and the beautiful sunset shots. The rest is rather dull.

Rewatch. Still a great military recruitment film. I'm not sure if it's quotable because it's popular, or vice-versa. The entire romance w/McGillis is silly/problematic and contained less chemistry than w/Kilmer or any of the other pilots. I'm still amazed Tom Cruise became an action star. Edwards' Goose was easily the best and most likeable character and a great bro. On rewatch, Kilmer's Iceman is decent too. Fav scene: fly-by with guy spilling his coffee.

Although 'Top Gun' is not without its merits, it's nothing more than a daft film. It is the essence of the era in which it was made, and looking back on it now, it's little more than a curiosity. The are some nice aircraft flight scenes, but essensially this is a film full of 'yuppy pricks'! There is little to admire in the way of a story, script or performances, and lets face it, it's camper than Boy George in a pink frilly dress. Tent city!

Top Gun isn't the worst movie I have ever seen but it's no where close to being a good movie. Tom Cruise is not a believable actor and there is nothing but a shallow, unemotional, and not very high stakes story bolstering a plot fueled by a less than average sex-initiated love story. I guess its a classic but not one I'd recommend.

You know, I've never been big on the Tom Cruise hate train, but based on this movie, I'm not sure how anyone ever thought he was cool. Based on Top Gun, Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards, even Kelly McGillis - they're all a bunch of awkward, vulnerable nerds! (A bunch of nerds who are all attracted to each other, yet. Scenes between Maverick and Iceman are filmed the same way as scenes between Maverick and Charlie, full of posturing, tension, and desire.) I gotta see this as a good thing.

I don't really know how to rate this. It has not aged well at all, barring a few action sequences which are still very tense. It has too many useless scenes in it and it has some of the corniest dialogue I've heard in a major release. The unintentional homosexual undertones are funny to me because of how often they just become "tones". In fact, most aspects of the movie occasionally become so bad they are funny.

The best thing about Top Gun is its soundtrack. The film is otherwise a mixed bag of flying, grieving, and flirting. Well, I understand the appeal; fighter jets are cool and Tony Scott got some great images with planes taking off and so on... And Danger Zone and Take my Breath Away with Top Gun are as the 80s as you can go. But that said, the real tensions are so contrived and pointless and all the fighting scenes are just a mess (I appreciate the amount of work there, but they are still a mess). After a while, completely disengaged with whatever is going on, I watched it as a time capsule experiment.

My first watch, so I have no nostalgic soft spots for this. As such, it was kinda boring except for the few and far between fighter plan shots. Okay sure, it's a movie about the drama between pilots. I didn't care much for that. My absolute favorite plot filler, vapid romanticism, takes up a third of the film. YAY! The acting is mediocre, the 80s soundtrack is okay, I guess. The best part of this film is the [unintended?] homo-eroticism.
