While Gunbuster's final mission destroyed the space monsters' star system, the intergalactic war still continues. Earth's only hope lies in the hands of "TOPLESS", an elite mecha group with children possessing supernatural powers and new Buster Machines. Among their ranks is a rookie named Nono and the ace pilot Raruku - whom Nono looks at as a "big sister." Gunbuster was one of the absolute messiest anime I've ever seen, and Diebuster takes that energy and uses it to be messy on purpose, in an energetic, colorful, spectacular fashion, that feels like the first emergence of the storytelling style Studio Trigger would make their own. It feels like a proto-Gurren Lagann, but delightfully sapphic, and picks and chooses the most interesting elements of Gunbuster to shape its world and tell its story. And that ending - GOSH.

Nice little follow-up to a series that was advanced for its time. Gorgeous animation (pretty much on par or better than Gurren Lagann) and a short amount of episodes make this an easy watch.

This has a completely different look and feel from the classic Gunbuster. In fact, this feels more Gurren Lagann than Gunbuster. It's not that this was bad, it just didn't live up to the Gunbuster name.
