The special effects hold up, but the joke is undeniably one-sided and Topper's wife is terribly annoying (intentionally so). The three leads all fare marvelously, Grant as his usual slick self, Bennett both alluring and sweet, and with Young's slapstick and incredulousness as the trumph.

Dreary comedy. I just don't see what charms people about this. Could it be the superannuated special effects?

A notch below greatness but still a wonderfully enjoyable comedy with charismatic performances from the three leads and some very effective special effects.

"Topper" is one of those cheesy romantic comedies from the early age of cinema that I have an unwanted soft spot for. If they would have nixed Bennett gave us some more Grant we could have gotten a keeper. Surprisingly, the real breadwinner here was young, whom I've never really taken note of before. I somehow think that the whole gimmick here was an excuse for not spending any money on special effects.

An awful lot of fun (with Constance Bennett and everything).

Roland Young becomes the bad boy of the world of financia thanks to Cary Grant & Constance Bennett haunting him! This was delightful! Young was just the sweetest dry person in the world and was adorable with Billie Burke! Grant & Bennett were probable a bit over-obnoxious as the jet setting party people, but opposite Young it evened out. Lot's of hilarious sequences with the invisible ghosts guiding Young through life. Topper is a movie that brings the smile and keeps it there.

Cary Grant is underused, but other than that it's a quick witty proto-Beetlejuice.

This title can be summed up in a single word: "Hijinks". Certainly worth seeing if you enjoy 30's-era films, seeing their manner of dress, hearing their style of speech and the music, and appreciating their acting styles. But be prepared for it to feel slow by today's standards and have little in the way of plot. The point of the film was escapism during the Depression so don't expect more than fluff.

Charming ghost couple, cool special effects and some funny moments, but it is simply not enough to make this fully enjoyable
