Well, that was definitely laying it on pretty thick (proving once again that there's nothing at all mellow about melodrama)...but well-made anyway, and spotlighting quite a subversive outlook (before the formulaic ending is reached).

Matarazzo puts the "drama" in "melodrama" and at first it's too ridiculous to handle. But then it gets so ridiculous that it's hilarious. And then it gets even more ridiculous and becomes kind of awesome. Some have compared Matarazzo to Sirk, but I see little of that subversive quality here, just pandering. But it's effective pandering, and you can't help getting invested it, despite the absurdity. Sanson plays the martyr to the hilt. While I can't say this movie is "good," it is entertaining.

With Amedeo Nazzari being in jail most of the movie, it was up to Yvonne Sanson to carry the torment trying to take care of her child, only to get the cold treatment from her old stepmother. Solid drama, but not to the point where any tears was lining-up from the hardship she faced. Does have a lovely end when the old lady finally naps!
