I love Paul Newman, but I feel like his talents weren't really on display with this role. Overall, it's a pretty standard Hitchcock, with the well-designed tension you expect. But it's not a stand out, and definitely loses steam by the end. The score also reminded me a lot of Airplane, which was strange.

A Hitchcock film starring both Newman and Andrews in their prime -- what could go wrong? It was weird to see a green-screened lunch scene. I felt like a genius a few minutes in when I said, "oh, Torn Curtain is a play on the Iron Curtain."

I actually liked the tediousness of the third act (including a daring escape to East Berlin on... a slow moving commuter bus), and that farmhouse murder scene is as good as everyone says it is. A lesser work, but not at all a bad one.

Not Hitchcock's finest hour, but it does have more than a few good suspense scenes. Unfortunately it also has Julie Andrews as the most obnoxious woman on earth.

Although definitely not his best film, I still just love the way he builds up the plot, the tension, narrowing in everything towards an unavoidable last scene... that unfortunately doesn't reeeeally come.

The obvious criticism is how dated this film looks, especially when you compare it to other films being released around this period. The rear projection, the very-obvious matte backgrounds and the set-bound nature of a few of the scenes really do detract from an otherwise solid thriller. There are at least three or four really suspenseful moments, with the farmhouse scene being the highlight.
