The weakest and least necessary entry in the series by a large margin, with some sloppy storytelling and a core philosophy that betrays what's gone before. If you can get past all that (not sure I can), sure, it's enjoyable. Forky should have either been more prominent or cut entirely.

Sue me. I thought this was excellent. While I was very satisfied with how the last film ended, this is an unbelievably wonderful addition to the franchise. Woody gets the most development and screentime, so you may be left wanting that old chemistry from the earlier films, but this film somehow manages to make good use of its new addition. I couldn't stop tearing up for the last fifteen minutes of the film. Continues the story with rich storytelling, laughs and tears. Pixar has done it again!

I never thought I'd ever utter the phrase "I would've liked to have seen more of the spork's existential anguish," but welp, here I am. It's probably the straight-up funniest film Pixar has made, and it's a testament to their strength as human story-tellers that even though I cried in the theatre, I felt disappointed because I know they can do even more. The weakest in the franchise by a slim margin, which is like calling Eyes Wide Shut the weakest Kubrick film: it's still a big accomplishment.

What at first seems like a callous cash-grab after the zenith that is Toy Story 3, part 4 successfully asserts its relevance by exploring new series themes of revision, reincarnation, and reinvention. The fact that Woody had an arc yet unrealized blew me away - and its resolution was a bold departure from (or is it expansion of?) the characters' existential Purpose of the previous entries. On that note, the Philosophy of Forky brings me welcome mental pain.

I doubt any sequel will top the 1st Toy Story in terms of streamlined storytelling and orchestration, but this chapter is bursting at the seams with heart and laughs, a more than welcome new entry that may leave you pondering the values of love and selfless sacrifice as it tickles your belly with many a laugh. Those aren't tears; those are just my eyes sweating.

Takes the franchise’s premise to its logical (and depressing) conclusion by finally approaching the existensial crisis that the immortal main characters face when they‘re unable to follow their mortal counterparts. Although this concept was heavily explored in TS3 (and to a lesser degree in the first two installments), the hope that we’re left with here feels far less abundant than ever before. Sometimes, a happy ending simply means moving on and persisting in spite of our fading dreams.

TS3 was the perfect end to a perfect trilogy of animated films. There's really no way another installment could top it. So, ultimately, what we get is another really good movie, but it feels like an extended and occasionally unnecessary epilogue that shakes up some core franchise philosophy. There's plenty to like though; it's still heartfelt and it might have the most humor in the series with Forky and Bunny/Ducky offering hilarious scenes. Woody's character arc is brilliantly realized too.

Leave it to Pixar to make an unnecessary sequel feel so necessary. While Toy Story 3 felt like the perfect bow on the story-focused package, this fourquel places an arguably prettier bow on the character-focused package. It's a lovely epilogue for the heart of this franchise.

Hilarious, heartfelt, and surprisingly thematically rich even for this, the most melancholy of major franchises. Could have done with more from a lot of the original characters, but the new introductions are stupendous, and Bo Peep’s reintroduction as a Mononoke-esque badass is perfect. The visuals are as gorgeous as you would expect, and the emotional moments, if not quite as hard-hitting as the ones in 3, still had me crying in the cinema. Main issue was not enough Forky. Forky forever.

I think it should have ended with TS3, this feels like well-worn territory, and none of the personal relationships were built up enough to care about any romantic aspects. It's beautiful and well made and not poorly written, it's just overkill.

Can Keanu do no wrong? Duke Kaboom is easily the greatest addition to the toys. The Toy Story franchise is one of the best of all time and I still want more. I've enjoyed every single iteration immensely. The animation in this was gorgeous and the story is both funny and touching. The film made a billion dollars worldwide, so can we expect a Toy Story 5? I like the idea of Forky a good deal more than how he turned out in the film, and none of the new characters were keepers for me. Pixar is not running on fumes here, though, but they definitely don't come close to reaching the highs of 'Toy Story 3', either. However, 'Toy Story 4' (I applaud Pixar for keeping it clean by refraining from adding colons, etc.) is, nevertheless, a relatively welcome and solidly entertaining addition to the franchise.

I was very surprised by this Toy Story film; I liked it way more than I thought I would. I still stand by the original trilogy being perfect and not needing any more movies-- no matter how strong the fourth is, it will always feel "tacked" on. But I did enjoy myself. I laughed, I cried (surprisingly at the doll character's storyline), and I was pretty satisfied. I don't know how I feel about the end though. It feels a little out of character for Woody, in my opinion.

Completely unnecessary and yet still fantastic. I was really skeptical when this film was announced and subsequently the release dates were pushed back. Ultimately, it didn't matter. The story was great, the animation was great. Think of it as more the first entry of a new series with some old characters, rather than the fourth entry of an existing series.

The world of Toy Story is simply a delight to explore, still full of colorful characters and emotional depth even after all these years. This one tackles the thematic issues of the series with a masterful bittersweet ray of hope: the cycle of love will live on for some, but being a "lost toy"--the most dreaded state of existence in the previous three--turns out to not be as bad as you'd think.

Toy Story 4 does a great job at making itself feel necessary, after we all thought 3 was the perfect end to the trilogy. 4 takes on new themes and old characters in perfect and interesting ways. And though its not the perfect conclusion that 3 was, it holds up in its own right that leaves it hard to compare to the original trilogy. That being said, I loved it.

While Toy Story 4 makes leaps and bounds forward in its visuals, animation, and is probably the most original sequel out of the bunch, there's a massive problem with Buzz Lightyear. He's not only under-utilized, but he is entirely out of character to the point where this once friend and leader can no longer think for himself and acts like an idiot from beginning to end, presumably for laughs. Unacceptable.

A wondrous and inventive adventure film; feels more than ever pitched at an adult audience (or adults who've grown up with these films). The new characters are just as much fun as the veterans, with Key and Peele's malcontents the highlight, and the animation itself is top-notch, more tangible and believable than ever. Given the theme of the film, it's perhaps ironic that the film occasionally struggles to justify the need for its own existence, after Part 3's poignant and conclusive wrap-up.

TS3 was not just one of the best animated movies ever, it was also a poignant cap to the toy saga. In light of that TS4 comes across somewhat redundant, retreating the same existential crisis themes for a fourth time. Still, as a testement to both the universe created and the creative powers at Pixar, it is actually a really good film.

Still going strong after 4 films, the biggest change is the quality of the animation of course. It just looked so gorgeous. The Woody focus on this one is quite heavy but Bo's character is quite awesome too. But the mini cop lady steals the show. It left me with a good feeling but I still think the series ended perfectly with 3. This was definitely a Woody focus which loses out on the interactions between the toys, albeit the setting is a lot different. Perhaps the worst thing is that it raises a lot of questions about the toys that didn't need raising. Wonderfully animated and lighted. Terrifying dummies. Nice twists. Annoying Forky changed his tone after Gabbie but I would have liked more scenes with them. Fav scene: giving badge away.

The animation was insane, and overall it's a good movie, but it sort of feels like an epilogue that wasn't totally necessary. Not quite as perfect as the other three, which I felt made a perfect trilogy. Buzz feels dumbed down, and most of the gang gets sidelined in favor of newer characters, which just aren't as good as the originals. That being said it does follow up on some loose threads with Woody and Bo Peep, is well written, and ultimately is still a fun time.

Toy Story remains the pinnacle of children's movies as it continues to masterfully juggle the task of entertaining the younger audience, while simultaneously exploring mature and darker themes for adult viewers to ponder. The existential questions they address are cleverly expressed through metaphors. I struggle to find another cinematic series where each individual movie shines with such tight script writing. Not an unnecessary money grab, but rather a bittersweet epilogue.

It's not unnecessary, with its expanded universe, deeper themes, and bevy of fun new (or just newly developed-badass Han Solo-esque Bo is great) characters, but it does feel a little detached from its three predecessors with no strong central plot thread or thematic thrust and the usual gang sadly neglected (which makes the emotional climax a little underwhelming). Slightly unmet expectations aside, it's still very fun (the action set pieces are great), very funny, and very well-animated.

Initially the jokes aren't as funny as 1 might expect & for a moment it seems like Pixar's doing the "woke" thing & we're going to get another story about the problems of letting even well-intentioned males lead but the themes are thankfully not one-sided arguments, but bigger & relatable to everyone. So we get another tightly scripted, perfectly executed, & profoundly moving tale about the bitter sweet changes that come with growing up that'll mean more to adults than their kids

Disney+Pixar are capable of breathing more emotion into an animation movie than others can do so in live action ones. Full marks to them for managing to breathe life in a two-decade old franchise. I am thinking of banning Pixar films in this household, because I was already in tears during the first time Randy Newman's "You've Got a Friend in Me" played. getting lost at a carnival was a critical moment of my childhood, so... yeah, close to the bone as ever. a hefty thesis could be written on the theological and existential weight of this film/series (chaw's review is a perfect primer), and there are political implications too (woody and gabby are boomers pining for order, home, purpose... Toy Story 4 is a good movie with some excellent animation (especially with regards to textures and lighting) but I had issues with the storytelling (more than the plot and themes) that hampered my enjoyment. As far as the themes go, the exploration of utility and purpose reach a fitting conclusion. My minor reservations lie with the increased inclusion of humans, and the noticeable genderisation whether intentional or not. Buzz got some of the best moments but is side-lined for most of the film.

Toy Story is always going to succeed because it touches so deftly on universal feelings of needing a purpose and being wanted. but this one doesn't do that in any original way, and the plot feels slapped together. it might as well have just been a full-on reboot, considering most of the characters from the first three movies spend the entire movie in the back of an RV. the floor was high for Toy Story 4, but it landed on it squarely. Welp, this joins other great franchises like Indiana Jones and Superman in the category of "should have stopped at a trilogy". True, there are some good gags both visually and verbally. But I can't love a movie where the first third is a tribute to the wonder of Stockholm Syndrome and the last two thirds constantly try to instill a sense of urgency, yet the characters are just as constantly wandering off instead of sticking to the main quest. A great moive, odd that "great" and a score of 93 makes it the worst Toy Story by a mile, but it doesn't bring the movie down in any way. If Toy Story 3 was an end to Andy's story, then Toy Story 4 stands on it's own as a finale to the toys story. The new toys brought in for laughs, especially Ducky and Bunny, are fantastic. My cynical mentality regarding sequels and Disney was silenced as soon as that familiar music played and I saw the toys I've known all my life on the big screen again. I think Pixar could have flexed their particle animation muscles in a new original movie rather than an overcrowded reheat of a classic. The story ended JUST FINE in the third movie. I would have so much rather watched a Bunny/Ducky movie since they were stealing every scene.

A pointless sequel that manages to make a point & chart a fresh course for the series. Its relation to the original trilogy both enhances the themes & keeps it from fully realizing them. Story & characters are all very well drawn but somehow I feel it could've/should've gone further with them (most clearly exemplified in the character of Forky). Maybe this conundrum reflects a disparity between the "adult" & "child" perpectives that seemed so effortlessly blended in the original series of films.

It's good. Better than good, it doesn't tarnish the near perfect trilogy preceding it. But please stop now.

Coming after an essentially perfect trilogy, the fear was that this would be a let down, and somehow tarnish the other films. However, this extraordinarily well developed piece of existential philosophy once again hit just about the perfect tone. I could have done with slightly less capering in the middle, but even the peripheral characters are so well drawn. The design of Forky is truly amazing. Also features some of Keanu Reeves best work.

This is kind of like an "after-movie", you could say. Toy Story 3 wrapped things up really well, and TS4 is basically an extension of all that. I thought this was a decent entry, though not quite as good as the first three. Most of the toy gang gets shafted early on. I did like the subplot with Bo Peep as a "lost toy". That's probably the best thing about this movie.

How dare they put my personal friend Woody into this boring sequel after he got a great send off in 3.

After the amazing ending to the last movie I didn't really see a point in a fourth installment. It just felt like a cash-grab.But even though this wasn't necessery it certainly was an delightful time.A funny, smart and heart-warming adventure with characters you love as well as new stand-outs.It gives great messages to kids and it really shows how far technology has come with some great visuals.Despite not being essential it's a welcome and very well-made addition to the Toy Story Saga.
