Straightforward zombie fare without anything new or refreshing to add, but definitely achieving what it sets out to do. Good looking (and creepily moving) zombies, a few tense scenes, predictable character beats and some sappy but earned drama at the end. As a fan of the genre, I'm not complainin'.

Though nail-bitingly tense at times, Train to Busan in the end amounts to a disappointingly generic zombie movie. The stock characters' endless string of inconsistently illogical decisions often makes it difficult to sympathise with those who perish, and the overwrought melodrama at the film's centre diminishes the impact of the impressive action sequences.

A bunch of people trapped on a train during a zombie outbreak try to survive. It doesn't do anything most zombie movies don't do, but it's well acted and has good effects. The trainbound setting is somewhat novel, and the pace is relentless enough to keep your interest throughout. The film lays on the melodrama pretty thick in a couple of places, though, and the dark ending I was expecting would've been much better than what actually happens. Probably would've bumped my score by 10 points.

A daytime zombie opera in which every door is made of glass so you can never escape the sheer absurdity of the undead. There's no hide-the-monster here, you can just see the fuckers flailing around in the background whenever the characters start talking - which is every time they lock a glass door behind them, to say some shit that didn't need saying. So as the trope goes you begin to wonder if they're not being more ridiculous because at least the zombies stay focused and work together.

This has got to be one of if not the all around best Zombie movies ever made. There were a few scary moments and plenty of Suspenseful scene but the biggest surprise was how well they did the set up and how much I like the characters even a lot of the smaller roles. Once again a Korean "horror" film show that you can have a good story, great acting and multi dimensional characters and still be an adrenaline charged fright fest. This movie has some melodrama but it also has heart which is a great

Hits every trope in the book. You've got your unlikely hero trying to win over his daughter and save her at the same time, only looking out for survival. You've got the guy who sacrifices himself to save the others. A guy who's overly paranoid about people being infected, to the point that he's a villian. The one who's unwilling to accept that his loved one is turning zombie so he ends up getting dead. They're all there, but the fact remains "Train to Busan" isn't original, but it is competent.

Successful as a character redemption of the main man, perfunctory as a horror-action flick, and soppy as a study of sacrifice for loved ones. Why do these people react so damn slowly? Why are they so stupid? You almost feel like they deserve to get eaten for being retarded. Typical frustration tropes. The best moments celebrate chivalry and masculine sacrifice - the rest feels like Shawn of the Dead without a sense of humor.

An ideal zombie movie. It has great/likable characters, tension, action, lots of blood, and perfect pacing. Once the carnage started, it pretty much never let up save for some moments to build characters. It’s just an insanely entertaining movie that gave me both fear and tears. Well worth a watch if you haven’t seen it yet, zombie fan or not. Without a doubt one of the best ones I’ve seen in several years, maybe of all time.

Zombie films are always best when in a confined space, like a shopping mall, quarantined apartment building or medical supply warehouse. Films using fast zombies are great when they work (Return of the Living Dead / Dawn remake) and awful when they don't (World War Z) The director does a great job of keeping the tension high throughout the film and has enough balls to make some hard choices regarding likable characters. Good zombie film in a tired genre.

There've been so many great zombie films/shows in the past 10 years it's hard to imagine any1 making a compelling zombie movie anymore. Well, the Koreans pull it off. With some great performances (esp the little girl), masterful direction & zombies that tackle, the filmmakers make a surprisingly moving entry into the zombie canon with the only things keeping it from becoming a classic are the director's occasional heavy-handed sentimentality & the deluge of quality zombie tales that preceded it

Snowpiercer-comparisons abound, but I'm reminded of nothing so much as The Host; another horror movie with a genre-typical narrative uncharacteristically set in perpetual daytime with the melodrama dialed up to 11. That last point accounts for the polarized reception; I see a lot of people criticizing this as "sappy" and they're not wrong. For my part SK cinema has always had the ability to sell me on unabashed melodrama and this movie is no exception; the deaths here hit me HARD.

Yes, another zombie movie BUT & it is meant to be a big "but"-done well - NB is a serious zombie flic not a wacky, funny one. The zombies are remorseless & like a human tidal wave. The necessary claustrophobic locale is justifiable. There are people under pressure with betrayals & character changes forced by the situational pressure. A few soppy bits but they don't undermine the overall quality. Good suspense. If you like the genre-a must see, for others - give it a try, it's quite entertaining.

Nothing new here, apart from some important lessons about caring, of course: I guess it's an attack on Ripley and her whole "just me and the cat and screw everyone else" generation, right? Yet another entry in the "no sin is greater than a father missing her daughter's performance, and it merits a punishment no less than death" genre (in this case, discussed earnestly and at length immediately after battling four hundred and eighty zombies). George Romero has a lot to answer for really.

It's hard to make something overly compelling and memorable in a genre that's been done to death like zombies. While Train to Busan isn't some revelatory masterpiece, it's a solid action horror movie that has mostly likable characters, great pacing, and feels like a breath of fresh air mostly because people are stuck on a train with zombies. It's a bit too long and a few portions feel contrived to move sections along but it's a good time.

Obviously convoluted and highly sentimental, but some parts of it are truly great -- the three men crossing wagons beating zombies, the dramatic battle between human groups (one is trying to reach the final wagon, the other fears they are infected), the personal struggle between self-protection and compassion. The sometimes uneven balance of gore and family drama manages to work well among tons of genre clichès. This is World War Z done right, but it's still no Snowpiercer.

Has a great story but can' do justice to it. Inserts a cliche family drama in the mids of a too overt plot of oppostion between altruism and xenophobia. It seems to challange social ostracizations and any societal division between people but reproduces the "death hierarchy" of Hollywood thrillers/slashers where poor, ethnic minorities, women and ugly people die first. All that moral lesson serves to the rescue of our lovely middle-class family ideal. + unconvincing zombies! Don't like it.

We need to have a discussion on how long it takes to actually turn into a zombie. Is it instantaneous? Or is it just long enough so that someone can utter their final words to a loved one? Finally, a zombie film that is not scared to ask who the true villain is -- zombie or...man?

Quite a surprise. This has to be one of the better zombie movies out there. I really liked the behaviour and the look of the zombies in this movie. It featured a cast of characters which were quite one-dimensional, however the characters felt more strange here, because they were not totally westernized. The acting was quite good; I actually felt moved during a zombie movie. Story was ok. Some of the deaths however were quite unsatisfying. Worth a watch!

Spoilers. When they're on the train the ferocity, speed, and rapid turn rate of bite victims combined with the tight quarters and how the space is used make for a tense exhilarating zombie action film. As each stop is found to be overwhelmed by undead a sense of futility rises...and also a sense that the films climax will be a dud. Which it is in a way. It goes on about 20 mins too long. The main character finishes out his cliche arc, his fate already obv.

An absolutely exemplary piece of zombie media, in my opinion. Fast zombies done right. This movie is legitimately scary/suspenseful, and even if some of the characters were just a little cliche, I cared for them anyway. My only disappointment is that one frustratingly cowardous and stupid character caused the majority of the deaths before his own. God that made me angry, but hey, it made me feel (and was depressingly realistic), and that's something.

I enjoyed its lack of will to build tension slowly. The film is essentially a road movie and it plows from action/horror scene to action scene at a breakneck pace. That being said, the plot feels paper-thin in comparison, throwing boring family drama at us with a barren framework of basic detail to hold it up. In reality, it's more effective for its chilling zombie scenes than its character building by far, making it pleasing but forgettable.

Very well done. Obviously this genre is quite saturated and clichés are almost inevitable, but in this one they're extremely well managed. Train to Busan gets almost full marks for execution. The zombies are especially great. They're scary on their own and terrifying in numbers. The movie itself, however, devolves into cliched Hollywoodisms before I got a chance to get involved in the drama. On top of that, I dislike the main character, and the fact that this movie plays so smoothly as a workaholic father's wet dream. The entire zombie genre is getting a little old, to me, but Train to Busan is a solid new entry. The movie hits all the right zombie tropes while managing to stay fresh and solid at the same time. The change of setting was interesting. I've seen a handful of Korean zombie films at this point, and this is the best of the batch. Movie takes a while, though, to find its tone, and I'm not sure if that's a lost in translation thing, or what. With the kid, it seemed almost comedic for a while.

while the only way I could invest myself into a movie like this was through subtitles, I really enjoyed it. Train to Busan is another zombie survival horror movie, but it does a few things well that most don't. From characters who I found myself rooting for, well done effects, and a pace that moves steadily along. Busan captures everything it needs to, even for people who can't understand the characters, you can still feel their emotions through subtitles and it's quite entertaining movie.

The zombie movie made me cry. It made me tense because I didnt want any of the main characters to die. It pumped me up with the sick running zombie scenes. This zombie movie is amazing. Train to Busan is able to keep it's gimmick fresh over 2 hours, by smartly and slowly expanding the rules of its zombies. This movie does suffer from dumb character actions, but I was so bought into them as people, I think I cared more than usual for them to act smart. The child actor is also very talented.

Compared to american culture, korean movie culture is less crude and vulgar, but paradoxically usually more violent and graphic. As much as I dislike most zombie movies, this one was enjoyable, due to the way it fits just right with the way koreans do their movies. It's character driven in a good way, but sadly the main character is uninteresting and the main villain is way too exaggerated to be believable. Fun popcorn movie. Is this the best zombie design since 'Night of the Living Dead'? Quite possibly. It's one thing to say that you will make a film about people trapped on a high-speed train with zombies, and quite another to actually make it and for it not to be just schlock. However the climax of the film (and indeed the main thrust of the film) is a bit on the nose; a father sacrifices his life to save his daughter and a pregnant woman. If it was my film, I would have killed off the two survivors at the end.

Excellent zombie film might not go anywhere particularly new or fresh plot-wise (and a more nihilistic ending would have been a better capper), but is still distinguished by the uniquely claustrophobic setting, fast-paced direction and quite moving performances, especially stoic young Kim, and Ma as the apparently self-seeking, but ultimately noble fellow warrior. The elder Kim is also effective as a slime-ball snivelling villain.

A train may actually be the best setting for a zombie apocalypse, and the initial breakout is intense. Besides that there's nothing new here, and it falls apart into blatantly manipulative irony, terribly written characters, and the same old social criticisms. Would be much more effective if it focused on the slow disassembly of routine as the infection spread - hell, all zombie movies would be better if they did that. I've never much been a fan of what they are as is.

An action movie as slick as anything coming out of South Korea these days... but also kind of dull and meaningless. People turn into face-eating zombies for no explicable reason, and the rest of the movie is a battle for survival which writes itself. Therein lies the problem. The main character is a selfish dick who only really changes his ways at the 11th hour. There are lots of crowd action scenes which are impressively filmed but repetitive and never add anything fresh or new to the concept.

What people seem to miss about this movie's originality is how it uses its setting to create its setpieces, utilizing tight corridors and specific rules for how the zombies work in that setting to create tension. For a lot of narratives, nuances like that add a lot and in this movie's case it uses it to great effect consistently making every conflict exciting. Even then I don't think the narrative beats are awful even if conventional, the ending scene with the father is damn great.
