Early work from Danny Boyle is pretty freakin' amazing. His choice of soundtrack and camera angles are always really good as is the production value. The performances are all really good, especially McGregor and Carlyle. The story is silly and shiny and dreadful and disturbing all at once, but the tone is surprisingly well-balanced that it doesn't get uneven. This was a pretty gross, albeit honest, look at the drug world, even today. Not for everybody but it's still a really well-made movie.

Danny Boyle blows everything else he has helmed right here with Trainspotting. Much like another film similiar to this but not associated with: Requiem for A Dream, which was released four years later at the time. It's as if Darren Aronofsky copied this original concept and modified it. A dark but jolly and riotous journey into drugs. Suspicious, jocular, cheerful, unconventionally odd and eccentric while also retaining the serious feel of other Boyle productions. Brilliant and original film.

I...I honestly can't think of a way to describe how disturbing, gut-wrenching, and yet (forgive this pun) addicting Trainspotting is! This is the kind of movie I think kids should have to watch in high school, at least parts of it anyway. Just to show that drugs are evil, and despite all the allure and promise behind them, they will utterly ruin your life unless you get off them. This is the perfect movie to get that point across.

Brilliantly shot, written, and acted, being simultaneously bleak, energetic, brutal, and humorous, this manages to capture an incredibly vivacious feel despite its protagonist's stated opposition to life. It reminds me vaguely of a less structured Goodfellas or a less overwhelming Requiem for a Dream, with its ending falling ambiguously somewhere between the former's regretful farewell and the latter's anti-drug conclusion.

A carefully crafted film which strikes an emotional pipeline through constant turmoil as the main characters struggle to keep their heads above water while struggling to evade the ruthless pull of the drug founded underworld of Edinburgh. Boyle provides some great direction, backed up by some fantastic performances from a talented cast.

You know, before 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' came about, this was the most stylish way that the thinking man could show his kids, why they shouldn't do drugs. 'Trainspotting' still holds up today, and although Boyle can't really do endings, there's enough great stuff to have it be a runner up for best British film ever - first place belonging forever to 'Love Actually'. Kidding.

Some parts of it are really amateur and silly. Sure, it portraits drug addicts, but it fails to be an anti-drug film or even an apologetic film. Standing in the middle, it means nothing, and also, I have to say - infinitely overrated.

A 90 minute film that feels like it could have gone on for another 90, Trainspotting is a frenzied look into the life of a heroin user and his close friends. Boyle approaches the subject matter with no precision -- there's nothing he's trying to pinpoint here. It's a stylistic film with a bumpin' soundtrack and a fun cast of characters that range from very believable to straight-up caricature, and it all works.

There's just something odd about the scene where Sick Boy explains his theory of life to Renton. I mean: it's basically Ewan McGregor being told "This is it, boy. This is the pinnacle of your career. It's all down hill from here" Other than that: great movie with a perfect cast. Not sure if this is one of the greatest anti-drug movies ever or greatest anti-modern life movies. It _does_ give me an irresistible urge to get shitfaced and listen to Underworld.

Fast, stylish and entertaining, "Trainspotting" doesn't pack the impact of "Requiem for a Dream" or the serious concerns of "Traffic" but it's still an essential piece of pop culture. Boyle, obviously influenced from De Palma and Tarantino, shows his knack for stylistic innovations and this results in what is probably the film's best sequence (the detox). It flows quickly, it's both amusing and horrific and while it doesn't make a huge statement on the subject, it's still a terrific film.

Time has mellowed (somewhat) a once cutting-edge, landmark anti-drug film, but it still remains a gripping, visceral experience, and succeeds best in its depiction of the dreary day-to-day lives of its protagonists and the seductive escape that the world of heroin provides. Less successful is an overlong (and redundant) climactic plot thread involving drug smugglers, but it is refreshing to see a pre-Hollywood McGregor throwing his heart and soul into the seedy affair.

If you hadn't been around during the 90's I would say this movie will not appeal to you. That said, if you were, it is one of the most culturally important movies to date. Aside from that, the story is fresh, it's interesting, and thrilling. Jonny Lee Miller, Robert Carlyle, and Ewen Mcgregor are amazingly fantastic (and thus sparking their careers). Very few movies have captured a time and place like this one.

Trainspotting is a timeless piece of British filmmaking and it remains Danny Boyle's finest work to date. As a shockingly immersive and heightened experience Trainspotting is beautifully shot, shamefully amusing and masterfully written by Danny Boyle. And the cast is one of my favourites with Ewan McGregor, Johnny Lee Miller, Ewen Bremner & Robert Carlisle all giving career defining perfmances. And the soundtrack is special. Trainspotting is a grim and brutal watch, but it's essential viewing.

Arguably the greatest tale about the struggles of drug addiction ever filmed, Danny Boyle's Trainspotting is superb in every way. This one crosses every line to bring to life the impact of heroin abuse, not only on Renton but on those close to him as well. McGregor, Carlyle, Miller, and Bremner are absolutely fantastic in their roles and, the truth is, no review can ever do them justice. You have to see this to understand how good it is. I've lost count how many times I've watched this film now. The Harsh shocking reality of Danny Boyle's film adapted from the novel by Irvine Welsh, was a controversial revolution at it's release and it still remains (in my opinion) the best film of it's genre, a timeless classic highlighting the problems of this huge epidemic. The film that brought Ewin McGreggor to fame and by far his best performance to date. All the actors were cast extremely well included Carlyle's portrayal of 'Begs

The only thing close to getting the sheer magic of Irvine Welsh's writing at his best on screen. Danny Boyle develops his rough style into a full, vibrant, kinetic film here - which never once patronizes over the subject matter, nor does it need to slow down to hammer home a point. Excellent performances from a great ensemble. I can't speak for how accurate the portrayal of heroin addiction is, but I know what it feels like to be Scottish. Of note is the brilliant editing - keeps you on edge.

Boyle's group portrait of young Edinburgh deadbeats bound together by their addiction to heroin -- a junk bond, as it were. For all its visual flash and dash -- all its distorting lenses, freeze frames, fast-motion, and so forth; all its head-first dives into the rabbit hole (or in one particular instance, the toilet bowl) of fantasyland -- its storytelling method limps along on the crutch of first-person voice-over.

Great style and energy, and a really dark undertone that makes the movie both humorous and disturbing. This is the kind of film that really sticks with the viewer - a handful of key scenes will stay with me forever, I'm sure (toilet, baby, etc.). I also really love Ewen McGregor here. At times comical, at other times brutally unpleasant, this film puts the mercurial life of drug addicts on full display. There are some Tarantino- or Ritchie-esque vignettes of high interest, including discussions of Sean Connery and Scottish angst, but there are relatively far between. I liked the acting, tonal shifts, and the occasional episodes of surreality, but I wish there was a little more of a narrative arc.

TRAINSPOTTING belongs in that category of films I've been aware of since their release, yet have never seen. I wasn't let down. If nothing else, I'd have to give it props for (I would think) influencing Guy Ritchie, but then there's the hilarious/horrifying script, Danny Boyle's energetic direction, Ewan McGregor's marvelous performance (the whole cast is great), the wonderfully grimy production design, and the thrilling score. Only a lack of cohesion and a weak ending hamper it, but they do.

As good an adaptation of a very difficult to film novel as we could get. Much of the bleakness, depravity, and unpleasantness of Welsh's book make it in here; fortunately so do the richly formed characters, the colourful dialogue and the moments of genuine comedy. McGregor excels as the (almost) sympathetic Renton, and Carlyle, cast very much against type at the time, is tremendous as hair-trigger psycho Begbie. It has real energy and style, but not at the expense of content. Great.

Daring and dynamic: Death and drugs are depicted with mercilessly horrible bluntness (see the neglected baby) and potent editing (see the anxiety-filled withdrawal scene in Renton's bedroom), capturing well the tragedy and pain of addiction, while sub-plots with tamer bits of hedonism (see the outrageous aftermath of the three sex-capades) add unexpected comedy. Excellent existential ramblings a la Radiohead's "Fitter Happier" frame the story and add a mischievous ambiguity to its conclusion.

It's been over 25 years & this still holds up. Why is it SOO different from most films about addicts? Because it's often alot of fun. While this doesn't glamorize drug use (if anything, it shoves your face in how awful it can be), it also shows how funny & carefree addicts' lives can seem. Directorially, Boyle pulls out all the stops, using music & MTV-style visuals to make lives that are as much of a grind as 9 to 5'ers (gotta get that fix!) seem compelling & surprising. Great performances too

An endlessly entertaining, unflinching, and innovative slice of life that has a permanent spot atop my favorites list. Cultivates an unforgettable look and sense of place that's totally essential to the movie, and manages to pull off its tricks without seeming gimmicky, thanks largely to the writing, with bounces back from postmodern pseudo-profundity to pop-culture banter with incredible facility.
